Never owned one. :( A friend of mine did, and she let me drive it a few times, was fun.

I owned one back in the 80s and loved it☺

Really wanted a Mars Red Campaign.one just like that one but ended up with a standard white 1983 model.

Should have thought that was blindingly obvious.  Dr Octane was indeed a wally for selling his GTi!

TDK might be able to confirm - from the article it sounds like he owned it quite a few years back now?

Yup. The pics are of Dr O's own car, snapped otuside MotorPunk's Welsh office, back in the day. He has owned lots of interesting modern classics like this. :)

Owned a Mk II GTi (normal one, not 16v).

Was fun indeed to drive.  So fluid!

Happy days!

Mk 1 Gti still looks incredibly good. Amazing design when you compare it to other cars from that era.

I had a MK 2 16v too. Generally regarded the best GTi ever.

I had the same car. A 1985 MKII GTi in white. Was an awesome car!

There's something about cars like this that makes modern stuff seem so dull!

I tend not to get rose-tinted specs when it comes to old cars.

Of all the cars I've owned though, if that was one I could have back it'd be a 1985 Toyota Corolla GT Twin-Cam 16.  I had the hatch version before they rounded the edges off, in the very squared design.  It was a stonking car.  I had a Janspeed exhaust fitted and it sounded superb.

I found the standard 1.8 GTi (Golf) exhaust note was fabulous coming out of the angled twin pipes.

Whenever a larger bored straight piped example went by, they never sounded so good, the crispness had gone.
