A question for those in the know on bm spec

21 posts in this topic

The future Mrs E has just been given a co-car after a promo & we have a question on the current 3er.

There are 2 that she could get, a 316ES or 316SE, looking at the spec sheet the only difference we can see is the SE has rear parking sensors.

Is there anything we are missing, such as suspension or anything else?

Also, on the options list for both there is no sat nav option, is this correct?

Additions SE equipment.

17" light alloy Star-spoke style 393

█ Automatic air conditioning, two-zone

█ Park Distance Control, rear

█ Rain sensor with automatic headlight activation

█ Rear-view mirror, automatically dimming

As above the ES was a cut down company car special to get you the engine / car but cut a lot of kit that was standard in an ES. I'd get the SE if you can the manual climate never looks the best in a 3 series let alone the other extras.

The only other thing to bear in mind is that the SE has an £850 higher list price and therefore a slightly higher company car tax liability (I'm going off the official BMW list prices with that statement). +++

Yes, we saw that, just struggled to find the full difference in spec to see if it was worth it.

As the guys have said above, the SE is the car to take.  The seemingly small items Jim has listed above make a huge difference day-to-day.

Agreed, that is the one we went for.

Order placed last evening, shame the pauper spec engine is the only one on the 3 er listings, but hey ho, the options were 1 er, 3 er, a class, b class, insignia mokka, v60, & v40.

She is a badge snob, so there was only ever the bm or mercs in the running & as soon as she saw the mercs only had auto handbrake that was then out!

16/18/20 business media IIRC.

She was originally on the side of the 1er, alas when she saw it in the flesh, it was realistically too small & she didn't like the front "eeerw! it looks like an 80's micra" was what she said IIRC.

Its funny what people like and want from a car isn't it. I wasn't sure what mine would say about the 2 series but it seems the car of choice now and she is the exact opposite of a badge snob.

She won't even look at any Mini (standard or clubman) because its a lifestyle car and she can actually park and drive and she says most of the people that drive them obviously can't. :coffee::grin:

On the MINI brand, our eldest would have proved her parking theory correct. :roflmao:

I don't think it is a lifestyle car though.  I can see why someone might think they are, but when you get inside and drive one it isn't difficult to see why they're such a coveted and well reviewed car.  That said, I do think the premium they now command is silly.  The plus side is that you get it back in rock solid residuals.

Oh yeah I'm well aware of the virtues of a Mini a colleagues wife just got a Clubman S and its a very nice drive and a nice place to sit in and compared to the 2 series good value for money.

However my wife couldn't be less interested, the dealer we went to even had a MINI garage on site and she didn't even want to have a look. I think its fair to say she is a hard person to sell to but that does mean she also isn't one to set light to the credit card getting rubbish so every cloud I guess.

You probably saved yourself an experience that isn't particularly pleasant.

The one issue we always had with MINI wasn't with the service department, that was excellent; it was with their sales staff.  Never before have I met such a pretentious bunch of people in a sales function.  They're the only people I know that don't hide their disdain when you come to negotiating price.  They usually start laughing.  It is one of the reasons (and the fact we felt the Audi A1 was a better all-round car and better value for money) we didn't go back to them.

The 120d if available would have been a stonking alternative to the 316SE (In my view, but I would forsake space and that front end look for the engine).

I understand the sentiment Torino, alas in real terms it just wasn't an option, as the co-car now will be the main car when the 530 goes next month.

So the space was never going to make it in the 1er, 4 plus 1 weeks luggage just doesn't do a 5 hour drive in the 1er.

When Vauxhall Astras list beyond 25k nowdays, a brand new MINI Cooper for 15k is actually quite a lot of car for the money if you can resist the options list!  You know you are going to have great residuals too

What was wrong with the auto handbrake?

Oh, and the B-Class?  Yuk.  Just yuk.  IMHO
