Scotty
Every single time I've gone through the Craner Curves, whether on a bike or in a car, I've always had the thought about this sort of incident happening. Scary!

bazza_g
Nasty shunt and thankfully he's ok - thanks to full saftey kit including HANS device. Have been karting with Ryan on trackand frankly didn't see which way he went lol! Young lad, destined for big things
patently
He went backwards into the wall, so HANS wouldn't have come into play.
bazza_g
Yarp, I just meant he had all the kit in a very well sorted Elise - is the HANS mandatory in all racing now? That could quite easily not have been a backwards shunt and in a road car could have been pretty horrible...
patently
It's on the way to becoming mandatory. We've been put on notice that it will be soon for us. Personally I wouldn't race without it, given that I used it in the first lap of my first race

Tipex
I did a similar thing in 2006 in my Mondeo, luckily I didn't hit anything!

Tipex
Suspension failure or right foot failure? Ahh yes, I didn't notice that at first, mine was a talent failure, although I still blame the instructor who I'm convinced thought we were in a RWD car! garcon magnifique
Ouch. Get well soon Ryan! There's a lot of runoff there but boy does it disappear quickly at 100mph...
patently
Most run-off seems to do that, in my experience
Ian_C
Ouch, nasty impact, glad the driver's okay. Definitely would have let go of the wheel before hitting the wall - although of course that's easy to say after the event.... MaxxUK
I'm Ryans driver coach and was at the circuit at the time (thankfully not in the passenger seat as I often am, or I woudn't be here posting!). The Donington Circuit TV showed the right-hand rear tyre "turn in" just before the incident which is classic toe-link failure on the Elise. It is a weak spot on the road cars but the race cars use substantially beefed up ones. They still take a lot of hammer though as you can see on this earlier lap which was the fastest lap ever seen at this circuit in an Elise Trophy spec car (previous records was 1:20.1, this was a 1:18.97) https://youtu.be/1b_cbXCq5KU Sadly the car will never race again as it was a complete write-off On the subject of HANS they are mandatory in the Elise Trophy and Lotus Cup UK Championships that Ryan races in but not across all series'/championships. Scotty
Thanks for joining and posting Maxx. Thank goodness the car did it's job of protecting him on it's way to the scrap yard.

theduisbergkid
Max - Have Donington moved the wall at that spot? I vaguely recall some online discussion about run off, or lack of, compared to previous years. Glad the driver is OK
MaxxUK
Yes, massively, caused major safety concerns when they did it at the start of last year. They have since move it back a bit but it's still MUCH further/closer than it was. See this comparison. No unprotected concrete either, car would have likely had just clam damage. MaxxUK
.. Actually, looking at it, there would have been NO damage whatsoever, car would have just carried on and eventually come to rest.
