I know for a fact there were a few Greater Manchester Police SD1s that could do rather more than 133mph.

:secret:

Mine wasn't an ex police SD1, but it did have big feck off supercharger sticking out the bonnet Mad Max style.

It only had a three speed auto box, however, it would do 90mph in first gear if you were on it, and a top speed I was never brave enough to find.

Imagine driving a massive comfy sofa, powered by a stupidly large blown V8, and that describes it, corners were not it's forte!

That will be on again today at 8 I think.  And seeing as that is my joint favourite Rover, I might watch!

There was a program on over the weekend with Michael Caine, from back in the 80's.

Plenty of Police SD1's and Mr Caine drove a lovely metallic blue example. +++

Incidentally, that liver run that they covered in the show, I've seen the footage before and knew (mostly) what it was all about, but that has to be the single most awesome thing anyone who is employed has ever been asked to do.

Get this to the hospital as quick as you can, do whatever you need to, awesome.

Great show, really enjoyed it. I am sure they'd seen our jaguar video though, the narrator used almost exactly the same words at one point!

Haven't seen it yet - but I assume a hotted up Police car to transport organs (the Italians use liveried - pardon the pun - Lambos)?

Semi-urban myth (the cars did exist - just where is open to debate) here a decade or 2 ago before helicopters became agile and fast, there were supposedly a few very modded (suped up engines with NO2, full roll cages, onboard radios, full armoured race seats and stowage, mad suspension etc) police cars - mainly Commodores - to get a group of the best cardio and neurosurgeons from wherever they were in Sydney or Melbourne to the relevant emergency OR theatre when called.  Police escorts, blocked intersections and driven like the devil was on their heels.

I did see one supposed car about 10 years ago - and it looked unassuming at first glance, but when you looked closer - wow!  Apparently a step up from what royalty and dignitaries have as getaway cars when they come to town.

Standard Police Rover SD1, just given cart blanche to go as fast as possible from Stanstead airport to central London, (first leg was done by a Ford Granada), with police outriders to stop traffic and special permission to drive through otherwise gated off areas opened by plod.

The Italians do have a couple of Lambos on the force, but they don't get used for much more than publicity, and the odd bit of motorway stuff.

Nice show, but Glennister is so clearly not a car guy. I enjoyed it though.

One of the best shows, a beautiful car and a snip at £108k..... after a £40k restoration.
