Hmmmm, might mention the overall tone to my friend and see if she wants to change destination (it's her birthday so was her choice).   Any good german cities anyone cares to recommend ?  Our main prequisite is a decent hotel (spa a bonus), good food/restaurants, a few touristy bits to see and some nightlife .....

Without knowing your budget or where you want to fly from: Nuremberg is nice with lots of history & bars or Baden-Baden which is an awesome place with many spas and a casino - maybe too adventurous for you?   ;)

If you want to avoid the more common places such as Berlin and Hamburg you could try Düsseldorf which is a real party town, its the richest city in Germany with some of the best shopping along Königsallee +++

You can then just jump on the train/bus into Lisbon or Sintra if you want some culture.

I love the place.....been a lot of times and still had our honeymoon there last month.

Barcelona isn't that bad.

We went as it was the start and end of a cruise for our first honeymoon. We stayed in Hotel Jazz on the way out which was great as it had a pool on the roof and wonderful views; It was very highly rated on tripadvisor at the time.

Sagrada Familia is a wonderful place to go and have a tour round well worth it for that alone. Get a bus ticket they are a great way to take you to Gaudi and up to the Olympic stadium which I enjoyed as I remember watching it on TV as a kid.

Plenty of restaurants and places to go down near the pier / marina area as well and its a lovely walk down there.

We didn't see any pick pocket evidence but like everyone else we were a bit careful and aware of it which is important.

If you really do want to change and I'm not suggesting you need to then Rome is three times as good (if not more) and as others mentioned Lisbon has a very nice feel about it.

No different from London, Manchester, Paris, LA, Miami etc etc

However (and not unexpected) Spain came top in a ranking of Europe's worst countries for holiday scams, followed by France and Italy.

I wouldn't ever be bothered about going back, but I'm glad I've been, I think the most sensible thing to do is simply don't take anything with you that you don't want to lose.

I.e. Only take enough cash out with you for that day, or a card, leave watches/jewellery hand bags etc in the hotel.

If you've got nothing to steal, you won't be a target!

Thats our plan Tipex, I don't usually wear any jewellery on holiday bar my wedding ring and will take enough cash for lunch/drinks per day.  Same for evenings .... can't do much but minimise our risk and take sensible precautions.

Actually those figures have Spain very much different to the UK. 4 times as bad!

Over 1 in 5 tourists scammed!

They don't deserve a tourist industry with those figures. You would think the authorities would be keen to clean it up.

Ha, they couldn't care less.

The only reason they even gave us a crime reference number, which we needed in order for the pick-pocketed member of our party to claim on his insurance, was because we refused to leave the police station until they did, and threatened to kick off, as there was more of us than them they backed down and gave us one eventually, but they were about as disinterested and unhelpful as you can possibly imagine.
