Andrew
I've a 1l bottle of 10w-60 in the boot which was filled in 2013. Should I renew it do we think? It has never required a top up but I'd like to have one handy just in case. Talking about the M3 BTW.
NewNiceMrMe
But you never use the M3!!!! Yet you keep spare oil in the boot and are thinking if it'll still be fresh after 3 years?
Andrew
Planning MrMe, planning. What if. Besides, it was MOT'd today and I do use it. 500 miles last year. That is a fecking disgrace, I accept that. Anyway, is the answer change the oil? Edited April 29, 2016 by Andrew
NewNiceMrMe
What if........you actually used it?
NewNiceMrMe
Oil that has been kept sealed can have a shelf life of between 2 years to infinity. But, oil that has been exposed to air does not. Most manufacturers will tell you 5 years in a sealed container from when it was bottled in the factory. If I was you, I wouldn't worry. Ultimately, you are talking about a small bottle being kept for emergencies. It is reasonable to say that if the said emergency did arise, and bearing in mind you've said you've done 500 miles in a year, that you're not going to be driving far enough for 50 year old oil to do any damage. M8CKN
Oil.....millions of year oil dinosaurs..should be ok for a bit Your petrol will go off quicker than the oil if you're doing 500 miles a year!

Andrew
I was going to say, £5 to you for the sealed bottle. On the subject of selling it, that is an interesting one. Of course it makes sense to sell it if I use it so little. However, the missus won't allow me to buy another when I want one. There will always be other things to buy, like a house, extension, school fees etc. I'd have to earn vast sums of money to justify it. In truth, I'd agree with her too. I bought it before we were married in a window of opportunity I don't expect to see again for a while. That said, I have told her I'll be having a Porsche Turbo S one day, but probably not until I'm close to retirement (unless I'm doing obscenely well of course)! I plan to use it a bit more for some blats around Jockland, but with a 5 week old in the house I expect the poor E92 to be underused for another year or so. Now I work from home I don't use the LCR much either. It has been in the garage having a few things fixed since December (filler tasks for them) and I think I've missed it when in London once. And I'm there most weeks. I really am musing selling that one!

Andrew
Since 2003. Mechanically it is spot on, the specialist always comments it is a lovely example and very strong. Bodywork lets it down really, a few dinks here and there that I've not really bothered fixing means I need to spend a few quid to get it to a good saleable point. Might even need to spend more on it than I'd get for it. I do love it though.
patently
I have a sort-of-rule that if the 911 hasn't been out for a fortnight then it gets used for the next journey after I realise that. It then tends to get used for the next few days (until it's either raining or I have 3 passengers). Just because using it reminds you why you bought it
Andrew
Edinburgh is so bloody small, and these three hangers on seem to go everywhere I do, opportunities are few and far between.
NewNiceMrMe
I'd sell the M3. 500 miles per annum isn't enough for me to offset the depreciation it'll be getting hit with. You could bank that money for all the things you've mentioned and you'll get another car you can make proper use of in years to come. Don't be so quick to say it'll be retirement before you get a 911 Turbo S. You can get whatever you want if you want it enough and you've never struck me as anything but a hard worker - so it'll come much sooner than you might think. Plus, with a new born and another young child I think you've got a lot more satisfying things in life to keep you entertained.Even 5 or 6 times the miles you have in the M3 in the past year, I'd still be selling it.
Andrew
Yes, I see the logical argument. Trouble is, logic doesn't come into it with me (and I'm logical about most things). I'm not fussed about the depreciation, in my mind it isn't an asset, I just like having one! Perfect man maths.
NewNiceMrMe
Well, that's your choice of course.
Tipex
It's unlikely to depreciate much, if at all, in fact I'd say they are probably appreciating, especially with no miles being added to it. My Subaru did exactly 0 miles this last year, the year before it probably only did 200, OK it's not worth any like as much as an M3 but the same still applies, I should get rid, but I don't want to!
