I think car makers should make cabriolets where the roofs dont actually retract. this will save £'000s off the price as no roof mechanism wizadry will be needed and the 95% of cab owners who seem to never have the roof down will still be able to say they have a cabriolet and use their car fully. many cabs round here also have hard roofs on for "the winter".

so to please these sad types, i'm going to start a company that sells "saloon to cab conversion kits" for about £3000 i think.

the kit will consist of a flexible chrome-look strip that fixes around the back of the car and under the window lines with adhesive tape to make any saloon look like a convertible with a hard roof. ECLIPSe.gif

I still think Fiat did it best with the X1/9. Looks like a hardtop but if you want you can just pop off the roof and stick it in the boot. No tearable fabric or fancy mechanisms or anything to worry about, it was a great idea. Fun little cars too. However leave it to Fiat to take a great idea and make it unreliable and hard to find parts for with questionable quality.

My Fiesta 1.1 Mk2 also had a vinyl roof.

Which could be folded away...

to become a convertible!

Also my dad used to have a gold coloured Escort Mk 2 with brown vinyl roof ...

Oh those were the days...

Time for me to crash this party.

Ah yes, the difference between Cabriolets and convertibles. Takes me back to my days as a young whippersnapper and my Austin Healey Sprite Mk II. A car which, I hope, is not included in Sniff Petrol's book. The MGB, however, definitely belongs in there. So do their owners. As a spriter we found that MGB owners didn't take their roofs off until the ambient temperature was around 40 degrees. Myself on the other hand was quite happy to have the roof off even in light rain. Something to do with the silly bracing system across the top of the windscreen causing water buildup and large drips inside cabin. So it was actually drier to have to roof off. Unless you had to stop of course. So the best thing was not to.

Stop that is.

Where were we?? confused.gif
