Reliability?

For any of you with a TVR.. how is the reliability?

Is it really as bad as the mags make out.. are you always off the road and tinkering with your car...

or is it just trouble free motoring.

And another quick question for you.. what are the servicing intervals like.. and are the services expensive??

thinking of getting one

Cheers

Dave

I did the Euro Cannonball run a couple of months ago and there were two TVRs in the event, both finished no problems, several other cars broke down though such as a BMW Alpina, contache, 2 ferraris, Scooby, one or two others as well.

The TVRs surprised everyone and i think the owners were quite chuffed to have finished the 3000 mile circuit and a few laps of Imola as well smile.gif

My only worry is the service costs, my boss had a chimera and the first service was £1500, it was sold soon after. Another guy i work with is on his 3rd tvr, currently a tuscan, and loves them.

Oh and lagoo if you do find this thread what tuscan do you have?

Luckily i havent had to have one of these done!!! But they have to do the value clearances, shims etc on top of the normal servicing stuff. They have to do the valve clearences when the engine is cold so they normally wont work on the car till the following morning!!

As well as running an A3 Quattro as a sensible car I have owned TVRs for the last 8 years. My current TVR is a Griffith 500 and still puts a bloody great smile on my face every time I get in it.

Servicing is not too bad if you use specialist garages. 6000 mile about £300 and 12000 mile about £600. But fuel, tyres and brakes can be expensive depending on how you drive. On track days I only get 7 mpg but up to 20 mpg on a long run. Brakes and tyres also expensive and short lived - but great fun.

Welcome Griffith!!

Didnt realise that the servicing on the Griff is quite reasonable!!

The grin factor in any Tvr is great, its just a shame that as you say they do seem to eat tyres!! shocked.gif But hey its worth it!

What track days do you have booked for next year?

Got any pics of the beasty to put in the gallery?

Hi Lagoo and thanks for the welcome.

Yep Griffiths, and generally any TVR with the old V8 lump, are pretty easy to maintain and there are quite a few good specialists out there who seem to price servicing at about 50% of the main dealers prices. Some of these specialists are also experienced with the Cerbera speed 8 and new speed 6 engines.

No track days booked yet for next year but hope to start the season again about March time.

Hope to get some pics posted soon of the Griff along with the Audi. Must admit even though the design is over 10 years old the Griff still seems to attract admiring looks. Are there any pics of your Tuscan RR posted and did you go to the Duxford this year?

On the reliability question - in 8 years of owning TVRs I have only once had a problem due to a blown fuse which as I had a spare was very quickly fixed.

Griffith,

The Griff was the car that first generated my interest in TVR smirk.gif and the best thing about it all the exhaust note!! cool.gif

I have had one or two hiccups with the Tuscan (finger followers & faulty Shims) but i still think its worth it!!

I am trying to decide on what track day to do next year, any reccomendations? I have done a couple of tracks but mostly on the bike.

Yep there are pics of my Tuscan in the gallery, then readers cars (at the top of the page) but they arent particularly good!

Yep i was as Duxford ( i am orignally from Royston just down the road) this year, for what i can gather it was the biggest one so far!! I did have a good look at the charisma Cerbera that was there, nice if you like that kind of thing! The standard of work on it was fantastic though!!

Its good to hear tales of good reliability in TVR's, juging by some of the stuff that has gone wrong with a couple of Audis we should really have a better profile smirk.gifshocked.gifcrazy.gif

Hi Lagoo,

I believe that the cam finger followers was a common problem that was caused by a faulty batch of heat treated components. From what I have heard from other Speed 6 owners this now seems to have been fixed.

My fave circuit is Donnington as it is quite technical with some challenging corners - well they are for me. Best UK circuit for speed though (in my opinion) is Snetterton. The TVRCC City region normally arrange a track day there at the start of the season. Normally get a good turnout at this circuit with a sprinkling of other fast cars to pit the Tiv against. Always seems that if a car is going to have a big off it is either an Evo or a Scooby - something about 4 wheel drive and lifting off mid corner.

I have added a pic of the Griff and A3 into the same folder as your pics. Hope to get some better pics when the sun comes out.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all

Griffith

Yeah i was told that the parts weren't heat treated properly, but as TVR dont have the same kind of budget R&D as other manufactuers i'll let get away with it (might have something to with the drive)!

Think i will have to get incontact with the city region as i work up the road in old street and see what they have arranged!

Nice looking cars BTW!

my dads is a Special one cos it was a prototype for TVR Power and they put a Racing Spec timing belt i think its called that and a cam shaft that goes into the Griff 500's

i thinks its the R435 and it was not just a 4.0ltr it was a 4.0ltr HC which it was the first V8S with a HC enginge in.... ECLIPSe.gif
