Pureguilt
I am just specing up my GTI and was wondering what options would be regarded as essential? I like the idea of leather, xenon, winter pack but I am struggling with the Nav system as I understand that is CD based and not DVD. Has anyone tried the CD based system? Should I consider the wheel upgrade also?
loddrik
Looks bloody good in the car though, does it give you the TV too? Beggining to think that cars NEED Nav these days, dashes look to sparse otherwise.
shao_khan
I wouldnt worry about leather, not been impressed with VW leather in my last couple of cars, so not sure I would spend the money on it. And if you use the R32 as an example, Leather, Alcantara or cloth doesnt appear to make a huge difference to resale values.
Wallachie
I think you should definitely go for the wheel upgrade, the standard wheels don't fill the arches very well at all. Go for the sound upgrade as well, normal speakers seem pretty rubbish!! Get the car in white, very retro and looks awesome with the 18 Monza 2 wheels!! Pureguilt
Thanks - The Nav has no TV option so looks dated and expensive for what it is. Will def go for the sound upgrade and the 18" wheels. The leather will be depandant upon the deal.
shao_khan
I really dont understand them with brand new car yet offering old nav technology ..... Agree with sound upgrade, standard VW seems to be getting worse (maybe to encourage more to upgrade).

[/ QUOTE ] I like the idea of a GTI in white too. The promotional pics look great! I'd be too worried about the resale value of a white one though. Virtually any car in white suffers terribly on secondhand prices - maybe things will change though?
loddrik
Not true anymore, Pepper White on a MINI is a desireable colour.
R32Ash
Will it be desireable on a MKV GTI though? I wouldn't want to be amongst the first to find out it's not!. (I did say virtually all cars are worth less secondhand in white by, the way. I know there are a few exceptions. )
Markallain
I suspect that within a short space of time the Sat Nav option will be upgraded to new technology albeit at a price hike. Think there was also talk of Recaros coming in as an option later in the year.
RS4_Barry
I didn't bother with the 18" Upgrade as they look just as bad as the 17's!!
Si_GTi
[ QUOTE ] Think there was also talk of Recaros coming in as an option later in the year. [/ QUOTE ] They're not Recaro as standard? If I were buying one (and I wish I could afford to buy one after the Oulton Park thrash, believe me!) then it'd be with xenons (got to have xenons ), larger alloys and sound system upgrade. Probably the Winter pack too if money weren't an issue. The manual shifter is a joy so I'd not worry about speccing DSG. Torn between black or steel grey though... not to worry, I can't afford one for a couple of years yet
Markallain
I'm afraid the seats are VW's own regardless of cloth or leather. Hope some different wheels are offered on the option list soon.
loddrik
I heard the seats were pretty good anyway.
Si_GTi
[ QUOTE ] I heard the seats were pretty good anyway. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah they're not bad. I'm just surprised they're not from a company like Recaro (as in the Polo GTI) or Konig (as in the R32 if I'm not mistaken?).
Riz
[ QUOTE ] I heard the seats were pretty good anyway. [/ QUOTE ] Yup the seats are comfortable, soft like the S3 seats! Riz
Moschops
Si, The Polo GTI seats are not recaro's....only the Polo Colour concept had them fitted. I think the standard Golf GTI seats are nice and looking at silver 5 door GTI in my local dealers this morning it was trimmed with leather, so I jumped in, they were really comfortable and the smell of the leather overwhelming, not like my wifes Polo or my R32 which had no distinctive leather smell at all... Si_GTi
D'oh! I was reliably informed they were Recaros Thanks mate
Markallain
I hadn't thought about the smell of the leather before but you're right the R32 doesn't really have that leather smell which you usually get. A bit odd.................
R32North
Saw the car in the flesh at the VAG meet this weekend, both Barry's and the Dealer car. Barry's grey leather seats look and feel really good, so much better than the leather in the R32.
geo_nr1
The dealers GTI was a 5 door too and just didn't look right IMO. It also had the tartan seats, which I am really not sure about
loddrik
tartan seats look great, just like the MK1&2 had, and earlier Mercs and 3-series BM's too IIRC.
magrillz
On the wheel front you could alwys save your money and buy some after market wheels. BBS or something else that is still classy. Have you seen the pic on AMD's web site. they have fitted the Sportec's. look good to me. I have seen a steel grey (or whatever it is) on the autotrader and I really liked that colour. Either way will be a nice amotor
Gareth
For what it's worth here's my 2p's worth... Leather - I like it but if I was speccing a car from scratch I'd go for the Cloth. For resale the new mk5 will still sell better leather as that is what buyers expect for a £20-25k car these days Sat nav - tough call really. Works ok and has some very useful functions...a bit slow and is just not as good looking as the Audi/BMW DVD option. If you want to save some money not having sat nav might be a way to go... 18's v 17's - try both and see both, just my opinion Colour - For once a car that looks great in white or red and people will specifically want those colours. The more muted metallics are a little dull IMO, especially in the 5dr. Xenons - 100% worth it, are superb lights
Ari
I've always found any car with 18's suffers with excessive road roar at motorway speeds. Just something to bear in mind...
