helfinger
hi guys, just wanted your thoughts on a 1998 993 targa triptronic as my dad is looking to buy one. Are they worth buying, and a good investment or is there a better 993 to buy?
RichTT
If you can afford it the 993 turbo is unbeatable-otherwise any 993 is a great car-and probably the best variant of the 911. As for investment -you cant go wrong with a 993-depreciation proof-as long as its loked after. The Targa is quite rare-and not greatly popular-go for the coupe or the cabriolet. helfinger
cheers for that. Is there a reason why there not very popular?
RichTT
[ QUOTE ] cheers for that. Is there a reason why there not very popular? [/ QUOTE ] Couple reasons: 1.Historically targas have always been unpopular due to compromised handling/leaky roofs(not a problem with the 993 though) And its seen as a poor compromise between coupe & open top motoring-this stigma has stuck with targas, which is unfair for the 993 as its completely different to the earlier models, and a great car,It just might be more difficult to sell on in the future, thats all. Anyway my advice is to have a look at all of the 993 models and take them for a drive. There is an awful lot of glass around you in a 993 targa but at the end of the day its what ever you prefer. Whatever variant you choose you seriously cannot go wrong with a 993.Just have it pre-checked out first by a specialist if you can. Personally I bought a 993 turbo 2 years ago ,its worth the same as what I paid for it-and most probably, more. And I test drove a 996carrera,Boxster s & a 996 turbo, and they just dont compare, and all 3 would have depreciated-whereas mine hasnt. helfinger
Thank you for your advice its much appreciated, what are your thoughts on the 964 turbo 2 1993? (3.6 L) would this be a better option if i could find a low mileage example.
Adam
have heard of a few leaky 993 targas too - would recommend you ask the question on a specialised UK (where it rains a lot) 911 forum for similar money the 993 4S is also a great car and sought after variant 964 turbo 2 quite rare as only made in 93 - again depreciation-proof but harder to find a good one and more hairy with 2wd I would go for 993 personally
RichTT
As mentioned above, the 964 turbo is quite rare and tricky to drive(but fun though!) but is not really a day to day car-but more of a 2nd/weekend one,but again, see if you can get a test drive. 993 4s command a heavy premium over a standard 993,and they're not a lot different. Id personally stick with a 993 coupe.
lukemg
all, used to have one of these, roof leaked like a sieve when I first got it (a year old). After I stopped crying they replaced all the seals under warranty and it was fine after that. Couple of other observations - it is very pleasant inside because of all the glass but doesn't feel very open when the roof is back (like a cab, obvious but I was hoping it would). It is chopped like a cab and then a diff roof is dropped on it. I lost a fortune but expect they have levelled off now. Also, interior is woeful, clutch is a b1tch in any sort of traffic and they DO break down (prepare to dig deep). BUT, goes faster than you ever need to (in a straight line) and feels special (for the first six months anyway) Good luck and enjoy !
