Hi everyone. Anyone got experience of these?

I got stuck in a yellow box junction near Marylebone on Saturday. I sat there all sheepish while hell broke loose. I rolled forward when I was able to but lights were still on red. There was a grey coloured Gatso. Will I be caught for being in the yellow box, or will I be done for jumping a red light?

I'm not from London you know!

Were you turning right, did the gatso flash?

I was going straight on but it was gridlock so didn't make it to the other side. Didn't see a flash, but wasn't really in a position to look.

You will only be done for jumping the red if you rolled over the sensors (you'll see the tar lines in the road just after the white line) when the light was on red.. by the sounds of things you were already in the yellow box and therefore past the sensors so I think you're safe there. I think the box junction cameras are CCTV aren't they?
I can see why they're used in London with the way people drive there, it's ludicrous, but having said that it's usually some goon that has cut across you leaving you in the bloody boxed junction without a prayer anyway!

Tell me about it, Shark. It reminded me why I moved to the countryside.

They've got a camera for everything in London but this one was definitely a Gatso (strangely with no yellow colouring). Interesting and relieving to hear that it night have been triggered by sensors in the road - I thought the camera itself would have sensed my movement.

Hope you don't get caught, the countryside is a far nicer place to drive though you are right /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/169144-ok.gif

From memory (and I may be wrong here) but I think it ws £100 but no points. Similar to the bus lane type stuff they dish out.

Tell me what you think, but I would be a lot happier with a £100 fine than being labeled a criminal with points on the licence. Am I crazy to hope it's a fine?

The red light cameras are generally only activated by the sensors, not radar, as they're not usually interested in your speed. Some of them can now apparently detect your speed if you were caught by a red light, but the system is only activated by rolling over the sensors while the light is red. So fingers crossed, you might be alright!

Not crazy at all! A fine would be much nicer than points if you ask me.

Nope, depending on age and other factors points could easily cost you more than £100 for the time they'd be on your license, plus you'd probably get a fine with them. I'd prefer a one off fine for sure!
But hopefully you'll be ok, its within 14 days you can recieve the letter in I think (correct me if I'm wrong) so you'll just have to wait and cross your fingers I guess! I know the feeling as I've been worried a couple of times! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sekret.gif

As far as I am aware.
If you get caught for jumping the red light you'll get a fixed penalty = 3 points + fine. Red light cameras look like these.

If you get caught for being in a box junction you'll get a £100 fine and no points. Box junction cameras use CCTV.

Thanks guys. So it all comes down to whether I triggered the blighter. Pretty sure I was slap bang in the middle of the junction when I rolled forward, well past the line. Also a chance the car behind me blocked the view to my number plate.

Oh well, here's to two weeks waiting for postie.

Bad boy. I think that is one of the most hated things a driver in London could do.
Especially on a really busy stretch of road like the Euston Road area you were in.

Out in the provinces, the junction blockers are replaced by Roundabout blockers!

I was under the impression that all the cameras flashed if taking a picture. I think you just get a standard £60 fine?????? like the bus lane camera set-up.

Good luck!

I thought the sensors were on both side of the junction, so if your between them when the lights change to read, you picture is taken on exit!

Entering a marked box junction and sitting on the box is an offence no matter what the status of the light sequence.

Since the Cameras are not Gatso / specs speed one's, they don't have to be yellow, hence why traffic light, box junction and bus lane camera's tend to be grey!

I wish you luck, but you have broken the rules (no matter how much mitigation you have).

I know I broke the rules, just wanted people's opinions on whether I can expect a letter in the post. I have the upmost respect for people who live in London, and I'm sorry to all the people on the bus I blocked. I couldn't tell if they were miserable because of me or becasue they lived in London. I gave them a courteous smile and a jaunty wave. I am now safely back home.

I thought cameras were only painted yellow was because the local police authority got a cut of the fine, not particularly because they had to be. I must admit there's not many cameras about that aren't yellow these days, but there are a few, even speed cameras.

the rules for yellow boxed junctions are " you must not enter unless your exit is clear "

if you are turning right and there is a vehicle waiting to turn right then you can enter as your exit is clear even tho the box isn't

In your desription your exit wasn't clear as other vehicles going straight ahead couldn't move as the road was blocked due to congestion having even just your back wheels touching the box would be an offence the official advise would be don't move away until you have enough space to fit your car into allowing for a tyre and tarmac gap between you and the vehicle ahead

This also counts for people moving out of side roads so officialy the gap the box has created ahead of you is not accesable by any vehicles wether the lights are at green or red.

The box junction camera's are like speed camera's operating constantly and any offender is liable to prosecution

And should you live in the country then the rules are the same

I think you will be OK Somersetjim given the sensors are further back as stated.
These things happen and in traffic that accellerates / stops quickly it's easy to be caught out. Good luck anyway +++
