I like the X5 for what it is though. Doesn't say "drive me" when you wake up in the morning on a sunny day though!

[/ QUOTE ]

Ah, see my wife loves the X5 - but I just don't get em'.

I'd have a Range Rover over one any day. In fact I'd have an XC90 before an X5 too, and possibly even before a Range Rover.

Yes, I really like the XC90. I am old. Damn it.

Yep, I'd say its probably hard to seperate the two on overall ownership, some of the Audi range isn't exactly pretty, but then the same criticism can be leveled at the likes of the new 3-series. On the other hand from my parents experience BMW dealerships tend to be pretty damn good, where as Audi ones from comments made on this very board have a tendancy to be quite poor.

Its swings and roundabouts, I guess a large part of why I like BMW's is the fact that when I was starting to get into cars thats what my parents had and it rubs off!

You say tom-ato, I say to-mato.

You say B6, I say E46 smile.gif

Thorburn has raised a major point.

One thing 'in general' from BMW owners is you'll find they have much better things to say about customer service and satisfaction than Audi owners. (Exception being MOSE who has been treated appallingly by BMW).

I'm astonished to hear of some of treatment people have put up with from VAG dealers.

That's another factor in any new car purchase too surely?

SK's fantastic VW dealer reviews have been very enlightening too and it's clear all is not well.

dealer experience not relevant to me when making a purchasing decision.

if i like a car, i'd buy it. if the dealer is a twat, then you can always go to another dealer... there's plenty of them.

chester audi customer support is very good for instance, whereas a couple of other dealers are manned by complete nobs! smashfreakB.gif

Yes you are right.

While my experience with Audi started off with "you don't look old enough to own an Audi", it quickly turned better once I spoke to another member of staff. They looked after me well.

My experiences with VW are totally different. They wouldn't even look at my wife or acknowledge she was stood next to me when buying the Bora (on both times) which I must admit I didn't spot first time round.

They are the lamest of the lame. I have yet to really deal with Audi - my first service is due so it will be interesting, but yes, the Audi dealers in general do not get a good write up.

Having said that, they did go to some lengths for me when paperwork needed signing and at one point offered to collect me as I was carless for a few days.

So far:

VW (2 purchases) = PANTS!!!

Audi (1 purchase) Not great, got much better

Vauxhall (2 purchases) Wonderful. Couldn't have been nicer.

I beg to differ.

I was treated apallingly (sp) at BMW in Newcastle and walked out of the showroom after 20 minutes of kicking my heels.

I walked straight into Audi and was given the full works.

My crime? Unshaven and jeans.

Fawdingtons yes?

Well I can agree with that as I suspect would most people in the Northeast! They have a terrible reputation and god knows how they're still in business. I had a very similar experience with them.

Most dealerships are wonderful when you are looking to buy, its when somethings gone wrong and its going to cost them that the good gets sorted from the bad!

When the immobiliser tripped on my mums Z3 the local BMW garage sent someone out to sort it within the hour and free of charge, even though it was just after 5pm when we rang the garage and the car was just out of warrenty.

I'm probably the odd one out on these forums, as I tend to feel that nearly every German car just leaves me stone cold. They don't have any soul at all, their just objects that you climb into and drive to work, do the shopping, and collect the little darlings from school.

The reason I got into cars from a very early age was the flair of the French for their initiative (The DS) yet flawed designs, the passion and sexy style of the Italians and the heritage of the motor racing and Jags, Astons etc in the UK. What didn’t turn me onto cars was looking at Herr Flicks latest creation saying, “Ze car you see before you, is designed to have a multi-triptronic semi automatic cup holder that zat will never spill a single drop in your lap.”

Yes there are exceptions like the Carrera GT, which defiantly has a soul. But on the whole I’ll need a tonne bag of viagra just to be a semi over a German car.

So, older French, Italian and British cars... ah, you`re saying you like cars that break down wink.gif

Anyway. I wonder how many people who have a 1-series really drive the car in a way that they'd benefit from it`s RWD setup. Hell, I wonder how many could tell you the difference between FWD and RWD, or know which it is. The fact remains that it`s small, practical and cheap for a BMW; it was always going to sell well. I don't doubt it`s class-leading, but I don't like the way it looks, so even before you get to that scary pricetag I wouldn't have one even if it handled like a Noble.

And going back to the original point of the thread, there are probably better suited vehicles out there for Mrs Smitten than a one-series smile.gif

You've got to be kidding me, what are you on about. The Golf GTI, Audi RS4, the M5. French cars have suspension like sponges and are about as connected to the road as a 747 and italian cars are notoriously unreliable. British cars - lovely with class and flair but have been known to fall apart randomly...

You didn't spot she was stood next to you?..

On a serious note mate, A_S, John_Carter and I have been discussing this thread for about 20 minutes, and we all agree that the reason Mrs Sparky was ignored is because they probably couldn't stop looking at her.

Just our opinions mind grin.gif

How mad has this thread gone????

All I say is that I dont want my dad to buy one and now world war 3 has erupted over the reviews and driveability of this hideous heap of dung.gif

I will admit that I haven't driven a 1.gif and there isnt a disguise good enough in the world for me to drive one!! I know this will leave me open to "audiphile" comments, but i would rather have a new Astra over the 1.gif any day!!! Its nothing to do with me being biased, I just know an ugly car when I see one!

AT THE END OF THE DAY ITS ALL ABOUT PERSONAL TASTE, AND IMO THE 1.gif IS UGLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 169144-ok.gif

Yup, how did you guess? wink.gif

The sales bods (2 female and 1 male) happily discussed their weekend plans while I (the only customer in the showroom) lingered around the a 3 series clearly looking for advice. No way was I going to walk over and have to interrupt their conversation to grovel for assistance.

Ignorant, very ignorant.

So in total honesty, how many of the people that publically slag the 1-series off have actually driven one?

[/ QUOTE ]

Same way I don't want a Nissan Almera. Personal choice. I don't need to drive it to know I don't want one.

Likewise, I have yet to drive a B6 S4 Avant but that is the Audi I fancy as a realistic weekend rocket.

That's fair comment - but to continually slag a particular car off? That's the point - it is continual.

You don't forever slag off the Almera do you? No. So why do people forever slag off the 1-series. It's just got beyond the point of being funny now IMO. Initially, I found it as funny as anyone, but months later?

It's like a Knock Knock joke - they just become childishly predictable once you're beyond 12 years of age because you've heard them so many times. The similarity is uncanny in my opinion.
