bal5sidhu
Fancy Mk V Gti as new company lease car.Concerned re: poor reports on quality of stereo. top notch audio essential as i will be spending a lot of time in the car. Currently drive Volvo S60 with 13 spkr Dolby system - great. Any more views on SatNav with soundpack upgrade?
frsygti
OT: How many speakers are in the standard MKV in UK?
bal5sidhu
10 but some rumours here that it's less in MY06. True?
Tunner
My GTI does not have the sound pack. It may have 10 speakers and the CDR300, but the sound is shite. My wife drives a basic Meriva and her standard stereo is aurally fantastic in comparison. Audio upgrade is necessary if you like listening to radio/CD in the car. The standard fit is truly $hite! bal5sidhu
Cheers tunner - thats decided it. still fancy getting dealer to demo a car with soundpack to gauge level of improvement. If standard fit is as cack as you say then soundpack could well just lift it to average
SMB
For the price of the soundpack you can get some good aftermarket multimedia double din units.
bal5sidhu
Wouldn't even bother with VW upgrade if it was my own car - definitely go independent. Sadly, it'll be leased through work so a bit stuck there. I see VW have teamed up with Dynaudio (Danish audio company) for bespoke system for new Passat. Shame nothing similar for the Golf. definitely lagging behind in ICE - even Audi's Bose systems don't compare to those available for Lexus, Volvo, BMW, Merc etc.
aswall
I recently heard the audio system in a Volvo S80 and it was one of the best systems I have ever heard, and not just car systems! Downside is what you have to drive around in while you're listening
bal5sidhu
You said it! Drive an S60 (Co car) and had an S80 for few days recently as loan car. Both audio systems are quality. Chose S60 originally over competitors because of quality of standard audio. every manufacturer should make this a priority given amount of time spent in car these days. VW Bose systems too bass oriented and Bose have recently been slated in USA for poor quality of components (speakers etc).
scotw
So what do people recommend as an upgrade? New headunit, new speakers, new amp or all three ? I'd like to have decent sound (didn't order the soundpack as the Gti comes with 10 speakers I thought it was redundant )
Tunner
I will make a few enquiries and feed back my findings. I cannot live with the standard fit audio. Unfortunately I had no control over the audio as I bought a dealer demo. It has standard fit audio and CD changer in armrest. I bet any after market will not control the changer? AlanH
Replaced the stock headunit with an Alpine unit and iPod apapter. The overall audio quality is much improved, and I'm no longer sure that I need to replace the speakers as well.
Tunner
The Alpine would not control my CD changer, I bet? Local car audio firm said that the head unit was all that was needed to be replaced.
AlanH
I don't think the Alpine unit would control the CD changer, but I'm willing to be proved wrong. I suspect that the stock speakers are actually better than we give them credit for - it's the stock headunit that lets them down. Would be interested in hearing from anyone else who's changed the headunit but retained the stock speakers.
scotw
On the topic of upgrades I did find an earlier post about fitting new speakers. These from rainbow are designed specifically to replace speakers in a MkV. Rainbow Anyone done it or think its worth it ?
Snoopy
I have heard the rainbow IQs and the difference is huge compared to the standard speakers
Tunner
Local audio fitter mentioned that if you fit a harness to match the VW and aftermarket, the no 12 wire needs disabling? Something to do with the Gamma RCD300 being linked to diagnostic fault coding via VAGCOM. If dealer scans a car with the wrong harness, something expensive goes BANG?
