Buying from select at discount prices

Has anyone recieved a car from select yet?

am seriously thinking of losing my deposit here and saving myself £3664

would you lose a 5th sept week build and wait to save ALOT OF MONEY!!

do you think i could get more money off my dealer here if i show him the saving?

I am tempted also but an still wary - reading through the site there seems to be lots of fees to consider. Whats happens about the import duty - do select cover that?? Must admit I don't know too much about this - so might be worrying about nothing?

At the end of the day I like dealing with a local contact - if only they would be a bit more flexible!! Don't think the dealers will discount by much (maybe 2 or 3%??) whther you show them the Select price or not!

I would be a bit careful with some of these dealers, there have been lots of bad stories of people buying cars from these places with big discounts then being told near order time the car wouldn't be ready for another 9 months etc.

The uk-mkiv forums have loads of dodgy stories of some of these companies

They are all usually imports aswell.

Just some advice.

When I ordered mine in November before the hype kicked in I saw an autocar advert saying drive the deal were giving a 11% discount, I managed to save 2.5k on mine with options I specced out.

I know they stopped the offer around 2 days later due to the demand, it may be worth looking at them to see if they have started again.

They also order the car from an official VW dealer, mine came fro VW specialist cars in Aberdeen, It was delivered March 16th and it's great

I suspect the issue is drive the deal etc order from UK dealers, 99% of whom have nearly used their allocation for the year, so aren't always keen to do deals, find a small one in a less affluent part of the country and you might get a deal. Importers don't have that issue, but you have the issue of uncertainty.

It comes down to simple Supply & Demand....Lots of demand = Lack of supply = Costs remain high and without discount. That's the norm, so ask for discount or you won't get, but don't expect to get any!! The only thing you can horse-trade on are things like rubber mats and full tanks of 98RON.

My local (15m) dealer in Dorchester has an allocation of 2 per month and now only has 1 available until 2006!! Currently VW plan to only produce another 7,000 (presumably for UK market) during 2006. Don't ask me why they don't appear to want to produce more to meet demand....The demand, especially in the UK, has FAR exceeded their expectations....They got demand wrong but they certainly got the car right!!!! smile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gif

Personally I would be VERY wary of buying from anyone other than an authorised dealer due to long term practicalities, but I may be wrong of course.

The 7000 is a UK for 2006 figure I think, next year they produce for the USA aswell, and I heard that was from wolfsburg, so I think they will limit supply next year a little too ( esp with the R32 not exactly setting the world on fire). It's not in their interests to make too many , although they would be greedy and take the money, depreciation then really kicks in and longer term people will think VW's depreciate more and be more wary ( just look at Vauxhall and Ford). VW would rather use the technology in seats, skodas and audi and make money that way.

Reading all this makes me think I should get me order in asap. As long as one of the two dealers comes up with a fair p/ex price today I will be giving them my business - should get me car for Christmas then!!

Decided on Blue Graphite, 5 dr DSG, Front Centre Armrest, Leather, 18's, Highline, RCD500 + Soundpack & Rear Parking Sensors!

Spending lots on options again (even though I said I wouldn't) but I really do intend to keep this car at least 3 years!!

Thanks Steve....That explains things. I guess that those of us who now have our GTIs and those with cars on order should be well pleased that the Mk5 won't be very common and will retain its value longer (could be quite a classic). Though mine is the third GTI in this small market town of Bridport!

7000 allocation to the UK in one year is actually a lot for a top end of the range car like the GTI. In comparison Vauxhall expects to sell 1500 Astra VXRs so that says it all. The GTI is not particularly a limited production car, it's just highly popular. High demand is obviously good for VW, they'll use it to cross sell other cars in the range too, so it's in their own interests in limiting supply and keeping interest up. One thing to note is that it's probably not just the UK where allocations are tight, it's bound to be anywhere that the factory supplies.

Not sure about the comments about worries of long term practicalities when importing. EU law means the warranty is just as valid in any EU country so you should not have any problems. No dealer would turn away work where VW picks up the bill. The only difference is that it's normally only a 2 year warranty.

Really fast open stretches on smooth surfaces....60mph+ twisties....Hilly roads....Tight cornered lanes with straight bits to accelerate into....And all in such stunning West Country scenery....And Mister Plod not over active! sekret.gif

Warranty may be international, but , dealers don't get full rates for warranty work, normally it's around 50% of the normal rate, so they can't afford to do loads of warranty work, they need to fund themselves from full price punter rates. it's one of the reasons they don't always like doing warranty, if VW paid them full rates i can bet they would spend hours fixing cars much to our satisfaction.

in my opinion select are trustworthy. I investigated all the options regarding imports. First I tried allbrandsnew (and in fact ordered) only to change my mind later because I wasn't too happy about the car coming from Malta and not necessarily being full UK spec.

Secondly, I tried euroimports, who are good and all the cars come from Germany - but they are bought through a Danish dealer, and all Danish cars come with Cruise Control as standard. Whilst that is fine, and all cars were full UK spec, their quoted 'saving' was based on a UK car with cruise control, so as I didn't want it anyway, the saving they were showing wasn't as good as it seemed.

Select are different - they don't hide the costs. They simply put your order in through a large German VW dealership who they have a working relationship with. You are given a very accurate breakdown of costs - car price excluding tax, on the road costs, transport costs, VAT that will be payable to HM customs and excise. You transfer the money directly to German dealer for the car, and only after the car is delivered do you pay Select the 500+VAt which is their fee (and already included in the total cost quoted).

There is obviously a risk of the car being delayed, but as their cars are coming from the same factory as the UK dealer's cars, there is not reason why it should be more delayed than a UK dealer's car. There's plenty of stories of UK dealers delaying delivery to their customers. Nothign is ever guaranteed.

Also bearing in mind that the UK market for GTIs is greater than Germany's - its likely that the german dealer select use have more allocations left, so less problems with dealers going over their allocation.

I don't work for them by the way - I've just ordered from them, and have even forgone a small deposit put down at allbrandsnew to change orders.

Maybe it's a bit riskier - but for me it was a risk worth taking, especially as I now have ordered the DSG!

ha! yes that's a good point. not sure I've seen anyone on this forum, although I seem to remember someone (Leman?) imported a R32 from euroimports and said he had no problems with warranty and stuff in the many years that he had his. (forgive me possibly quoting you wrong Leman).

For information the UK allocation for 2005 was 5,500 units and it was increased to 6,200 recently.

7,000 is the correct forecast for 2006 169144-ok.gif

thanks for all your replies guys.

still not sure i can wait another 4 mths or so. am finding it hard enough waiting for another 6 weeks.... Its KILLING ME !!!!

was hoping someone had actually recieved a car from them so i was sure their bonified.

am really worried they might go bust or something and ill lose the whole lot.
