Chelsea Mick
ooohh..Didn't actually see it when the car was mis-behaving but that doesn't mean it didn't come on... It doesn't come on now though (It does light up when first switching on as normal).
Alastair_A3
The head gasket went on my caterham not so long ago, did it all myself costing about 20 quid But then again im quite good at getting my hands dirty.
gizze
Did they not get back to you today? I am itching to hear the outcome, probably not as much as you, but dieing to know all the same!
simon elman
I hope you get it sorted soon Maybe get new internals and a big turbo while doing the head. Simon MRCtuning

[ QUOTE ] Maybe get new internals and a big turbo while doing the head [/ QUOTE ] I like your thinking Si...The thought did cross my mind If it's going to cost loads like new piston(s) or such like I might well be tempted
Paul
hearing the symtoms, it could quite easily be coils. Like Molly says i am suprised they didnt even bother to do a diagnostic scan. fingers crossed.

ChrisT
Chin up Mick! I had a similar type of incident to you though mine was just about driveable. I was thinking the worst but it turned out that I'd split one of the intake air hoses and needed a new MAF. Several hundred quid later and comparatively the old S3 is going like a rocket ship, they way its meant to.
Mo-S3
Not good news Mick, i hopeyou get it sorted out quickly and cheaply. If it is the coil packs which we are all hoping for give the AA man a smack around the chops for nearly giving you a heart attack Good luck
Mollox
Coil packs, for the record, are £24 each from Audi at the moment. They are easy to do yourself (if its cylinders 1 or 2 you're talking about) but 3 & 4 can prove trickier as there's stuff in the way that needs moving. Chelsea Mick
Chris I wish it would be as easy as that but I've had a new MAF fitted around 2k miles ago and my hoses' are of the earlier type that are the renforced ones. As said earlier... If it is the coil pack then they can fit it free while they are doing the annual service

Scotty
Just seen this. I hope it's good news today. I'd expect the AA man to know if it's a coil pack though. He must have come across loads of A3, TT, Golf etc that needed them a year or so ago...unless he's a newbie. Fingers crossed.
mrzed
If it's a coilpack, it will sound like a Subaru, at least my 200SX did when they went... Fingers crossed it's not too serious.
Mollox
Mine sounded more like a sick flymo last month. I genuinely winced at the awful sounds it was making when I had to drive it 1/2 a mile to the garage. You'd have thought the entire engine was in bits... Come on Mick, keep us posted! Chelsea Mick
Ok just to keep you updated. I got bored with waiting for a call so I phoned Audi. The recepionist said that the engineer that is working on it has just driven it into the workshop and is diagnosing it now... I should hear something within the next hour or so. What-ev-err.... Chelsea Mick
Oh well... My worst fears have just been confirmed The receptionist phoned me and was bloody clueless as to what the mechanic had told her. I asked to speak to the mechanic. He was very helpful. Number 3 cylinder has no compression and number 4 had hardly any. He found that it was the number 3 sparkplug that had broken part of it's electrode and the part was quite sizeable and had gone missing. He is under the impression that it could be a bent valve and would be very surprised if it has done any damage to the bore or piston(s). He did say if it has scored or damaged a piston it would need a replacement engine They want 3.5 hours (x £92 p/h) for removing the cylinder head for investigative work. Then they want the same amount to replace the head after all the other work needed has been done. So minimum £644 plus the annual service plus any parts needed. Anyone want to buy any Christmas pressies that are wrapped up under our Tree? They are phoning back later this afternoon/evening to give me a full run down...... sitas3
bad luck Mick - I feel for you. I'd possibly investigate buying another engine and dropping that it instead - there have been a few going recently on Ebay. Hope you get it sorted soon mate! s4_sat
how about sticking a 2.7 biturbo in it like qst did?
Mollox
Or a 1.6? Sorry to hear that Mick So is that just a random spark plug failure with catastrophic consequences??
davidhodgkinson
Bad luck Mick Mine took a couple of teeth off the timing belt, bent a few valves and broke a couple of pistons. £4k later all was fixed
Chelsea Mick
[ QUOTE ] how about sticking a 2.7 biturbo in it like qst did? [/ QUOTE ] Oh yes.... Now I'm tempted. Chelsea Mick
[ QUOTE ] Or a 1.6? [/ QUOTE ] Thanks for your valuable input Mollox [ QUOTE ] So is that just a random spark plug failure with catastrophic consequences?? [/ QUOTE ] It apears that way yeah. It is overdue on it's annual service but only by 5 weeks. Would 5 weeks make that much difference to the life of the spark plugs? I was driving it quite "spirited" but no more so than usual. Maybe as I only use it once every week or so it wasn't prepared for that type of drive It wasn't on a cold engine, no redlining, no missing gears, just normal... As they say happens....
