I have a 2001 1.8T. Recently when I unlock the door and turn the key the dash display goes blank and nothing happens(not even the starter turning over). The symptoms are similiar to having disconnecting the battery. When I open and close the door it seems to reset itself, ie the clock and trip computer. I have checked the battery connections and they look fine. This has now happened 4/5 times.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm thinking that maybe the battery in the key fob maybe need changing??

Any advice greatly apreciated.

Thanks

Take the cables off the battery terminals and give them a good clean. Put them back and cover them in vaseline, yes really!
If you still have problems I reckon your ignition switch is up the spout. Does the dash light up if you wiggle the key in the barrel?

No, as soon as I put the key in the ignition the display goes blank.

I can't force it to happen, seems very random.

I'll try cleaning the connections, cheers

Mulkbear will know more about the immobilisor side of things, but the whole dash going blank sounds like a poor connection to me.
Do any of your other electrics go off??
Im not 100% on VW security. I think if the transponder was up the spout, you would be able to turn the ignition on but the car wouldn't start?

I had same problem for about 4 months on and off on 99 BORA.
Turned out to be a dying battery. Stuck a new heavy duty on and its not happened for 14 months.think it cured it.
