But thats the thing. I don't care if people know i have a GTI. If they dont notice the subtle changes, then they probably wouldnt know what the difference was between a GTI and an FSI.

The one thing that I really dislike, is when a Merc has AMG wheels and is debadged and you can clearly see its a 180 or something. That an 3 series with M badges!

As for the badge thing, If I have a GTI I want everyone to know. If if it was a 1.6 with fancy wheels etc then I can understand people debadging them to keep people guessing.

[/ QUOTE ]

....+++ Me too!

As the GTI is such an iconic car, I find it very difficult to understand why anyone would want to debadge. The Mk5 GTI is car to be very proud of owning. Who on earth wants to be just ordinairy!

And that's my thinking.... why make an RS6 look like just a nice Audi estate, just on the off chance you might get to prove a point to some muppet at the lights one day tongue.gif

i understand where you are coming from, but its all about individual personalities.

I wouldnt expect someone with quads to want a debadged GTI. I am very conservative and more of a minimalist.

absolutely mate! you put your money into something special for yourself because a.) you love the good stuff; and b.) you utterly deserve it and i reckon you should make sure everyone fecking knows about it. For me, sacrificing certain luxuries to sink my hard earned into quality and special cars is something i do to reward myself on a daily basis for all the work i do. It makes me feel good to drive my RS around, as it will to drive my GTi around. And if its a GTi or and RS6 or an M5, I don't feel i have to be ashamed of showing what it really is! So some people will be envious or think you a t*sser for blowing all that money on motorised transportation...let them! But who's the happy guy behind the wheel? You!

But the GTI has 3 letters on it's backside and nothing else, it's about as minimlist as a performance car gets! IMO you're just making something special, look ordinary. Be proud of the stamp, the GTI Mk V has earnt it!

So, many of us are saying that it's sacrilege to wipe off the classic and iconic "GTI" badges znaika.gifopenfire.gif

....Absolutely! 169144-ok.gif. Who wants an essay written on the back of their car? It's been very consciously considered....To the point where "GTI" is the brand rather than "Golf". And it's a brand to be proud of.

....There have been numerous suggestions what "GTI" stands for but it's become a graphic symbol/logo no longer needing further analysis. This is especially so due to the typestyle. It's technically an established 'logotype'.

From someone that is going to be purchasing a GTI in the next few months on the used market The 18" wheels are a nice bonus but not 100% essential to the spec I am looking for.

The obvious advantage to the 17"s is cheaper tyres and less chance of kerbing, however the 18"s are one heck of a wheel and if I were to get them I am sure I would not settle for anything less.

From a cleaning perspective too I am happy with VWs choice in wheels, my Mk4 GTI montreal II wheels are a nightmare to clean - had 3 years of cleaning those buggers and they are only 16"!

No one actually knows what GTI stands for, as the designers back in the late 70's don't even know wink.gif

Most people thought they were going to call it a GT, and then just added the I for "effect"

Isn't the "i" a throwback from the days when fuel injection was something to celebrate?

....I think it refers to 'injection' too. But I can't see how any Golf can be viewed as a 'Gran Turismo' car. GT cars are the type that race at Le Mans.
