aditz
Greetings! I wonder if anybody here tried replacing the Roof Antenna (not just the loose bit, the whole unit), need to know what it involves and what are the complications. Do I need to remove the interior upholstery? Thanks!
aditz
Should I take this as we don't know??
pritesh
I would gaather that the roof lining would have to come off to access the underside of the antenna. you would then have to trace the cable (if u need to replace that as well), replacement should be easy enough, I have done it in other cars like Pugs, BMWs didnt find any complications. although I have to admit the radio signal is not as sharpe as I would have hoped for. aditz
Yeah the roof lining I’m worried about. Nothing wrong with the signal it's just that the rubber around the antenna it a bit dry and cracked and it worries me that water will make its way thru at some point. Not really looking forward to undo the roof lining. Cheers!
aditz
Is there really nobody here to help us with this post? Is it that difficult replacing the radio antenna?? Cheers guys!
karlosthejackal
Can't help with the install of the antenna. I had a 1998 passat, and although the rubber around the base of the aerial was quite badly perished, it never showed any signs of letting any water in. So I am wondering if it is actually worth the hassle of removing the headlining to change it
aaabbb
It easy. Just take of the trim that runs across the back of the car at the very back of the roof lining and then carefully just pull down the roof lining a bit and you will see a nut that is all thats holding the aerial on. mulkbear
If you pull down the o/s/r or n/s/r door seal at the top of the seal, remove/pull away the b pillar trim you can the get your hand into the the area around the nut that holds the antenna in, you will need a 22mm spanner to loosen the antenna. Watch out because the wiring can be a bit tricky to disconnect
aditz
Thanks guys!! Mulkbear, with a Passat wiring it's always the tricky part, nothing new there..
Hudson
Another idea maybe, i had the same problem with my 99 passat but my rubber seal had actually perished, instead of replacing it the guy who fit my after market system simply cleaned it up with an alchol solution and put a thick bead of black rubber sealant around it. I know this sounds 'billy bodge job' but i can say honestly it looked just fine, totally stock standard, he did a really good job.
ocrp
Aditz, did you have any luck with the aerial? Whilst washing the car yesterday, I noticed the base of the aerial has deteriorated so badly, it has cracked in two places. Just worried about water getting in. Did you end up removing the interior lining? I had a quick peek, and it doesn't look much fun
topgazza
I did mine a while ago and the aerial change wasn't bad. Removed the strip at the top and managed to get at the aerial base without bending the roof lining much at all. It all went back Ok and looks fine
ocrp
Thanks for that, will give it a go. Where's the best place for a replacement aerial?
topgazza
I fitted a DAB/FM combo. For a standard aerial I guess http://www.incarexpress.co.uk/view_product.php?partno=A002 will get you a quality VW standard aerial or even....gasp....Halfords
ocrp
Thats not bad, considering that VW wants £43 for an original. I've found just the seal with the washer and nut for £12.87 at Vagparts.
topgazza
Again, a bargain....
pugboy
Just for the mast VW wanted £20. I purchased an identical looking one for £5.99 delivered off ebay. I noticed that my inlaws vectra has the same aerial as the passat. The part might be cheaper from Vauxhall perhaps.
