Hi all,

Im thinking about buying a 944 S at some point this year. However being 23 and on an average wage, I'm concerned about running costs and that by buying a 944 it has the potential to cripple my finances and make me cry!

I'm thinkin along the lines of a 2.5 S as I'm prepared to pay the insurance on this (compared to a turbo for example) and its spec isn't too bad (compared to early 2.5s).

My heart says go for it but my head says hang on!

I've heard the 2.5 S is spec'd to do 0-60 in 7.5 secs but given the age i'm thinkin more like 8-8.5 secs. Sound about right?

Alternatively I'm thinking about going for a 2.0 20V Fiat Coupe Turbo. Of which is similar in terms of purchase and insurance costs but is newer and faster (build quality I know isn't the best tho), but also has potential to burn a huge hole in my pockets.

What do you suggest? Whats it like to own a 944 S? Also how come a 2.7 is spec'd as being slower than the 2.5 S?

Thanks!

Nick

PS. Hope I dont sound like some chav who just wants a fast/flash car to show off in because thats really not me. I genuinely have a passion for cars and last year finished a degree in Transport (specifically cars and m.bikes) Design. I currently drive a BMW E30 which I do enjoy and love its retro appeal. However its only a 318is and i'm looking to upgrade. Have thought about an E30 325i Sport but I wouldn't mind taking the oppurtunity to go completely different although its not totally written off as an option, especially since its more financially feasable.

Opinions will be appreciated!

I've had a 944 Turbo and an S2 - In my opinion - these are the ones to go for. The Turbo is the better one if you like speed. Its a quick car and can be tuned easily to go faster. The S2 has a very torquey engine and is may be easier to drive but not as exciting - still quick though.

There's plenty about. They're pretty reliable. Parts are cheap-ish and classic insurance should keep costs down. Check out Ebay for bargains. Make sure you do an HPI check - many were crashed.

I think the 2.7 is best of the early cars last of the line with everything sorted, only made for 1989 (but i would say that as i own one), quicker than 8v 2.5 not 16v 2.5.

I once tested a 20v Fiat coupe turbo around Millbrook and can safely say it left its mark. I have not driven anything like it since, Inc a Ferrari 328, Cosworth Escort, and Subaru Impreza turbo.

I can see it costing any more to run than the Porsche and would give you a much newer car.

The 944 is a beautifully balanced car and very easy to drive but if you’re after performance you need to look at an S2 or Turbo.

Personally I’d go for the Fiat, I’ve even though of p/x the 944 for one but my daughters would kill me. Neither car is going to be cheap to run and a bad Porsche will cost more than a good one to put right.

The 944S has the rep of being the most unreliable 944. They are some bargain 944 models around. Try for a Turbo. You will never regret it.
