patrick12345
23mpg around town is pretty good for an A8 My Golf GTI DSG only does 24 and not much more anywhere else I use Tesco 99 ron I find it has more get up and go than Optimax 98 Seriously considering a bigger car as the Golf is tiny and the mpg return is crap. login
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I took a coring bit and drilled 3 x 2" holes in the bottom of my airbox (i live in spain, and need more air!), and although I couldnt say it is more responsive, it feels like it is, sounds like a v8! (people turn around when you open her up!) and it will hit a registered 170mph on the speedo regularly, and still has more go. It often makes me wonder how accurate this speedo is?? [/ QUOTE ] 170 was that down hill, with a tail wind and being towed by an de-restricted S8 Defo something wrong with the speedo my friend. I'm gonna see if I can tap some free steam air from the air vent at the bottom of the bumper, next to where the aletrnator gets its cooling from [/ QUOTE ] Maybe it´s the air over here. everytime i hit the motorway, it winds round to 160 quickly, then continues easily to 170. never felt a rev limiter. maybe the increased airflow helps acheive the speed, and maybe the previous owner had the restrictor taken off? Feels much more planted at speed than my 996 C4 did.

Ska
Funny, I was just thinking of that; it wouldn't just be a strightish pipe, I'd put a couple of drain holes in an L shaped duct or something
rothwell
This whole topic sort of scares me off buying a 4.2 now... On a fast motorway cruise like sticking at 90mph without using cruise control just your foot control speed what sort of MPG do you get?
Atomic
[ QUOTE ] On a fast motorway cruise like sticking at 90mph without using cruise control just your foot control speed what sort of MPG do you get? [/ QUOTE ] For my 2.8... 32MPG. Did it last week for best part of 450 miles and certainly for 30+ mins at a time to get a decent reading. Dropping to 80 raised the figure to 33.5. Didnt try any slower - speed limits are designed to be broken lol.
rothwell
32mpg @ 90mph... That is rather good I must say. Is it quite, I have never actually driven a previous shape A8 at motorway speeds before.
ashleyadam
11 mpg sounds about right I am getting 14.3 from new s4
crasher
I reset the lifetime MPG on mine when i got it (at 40k miles). 46,000 miles later and its sitting at 22.4 - most of my miles are motorway, and many are at speeds in excess of 75mph
alera
I did a 200 mile road trip to the lakes last weekend. The trip computer average for the journey was 28.5mpg. I would say the journey was around half and half motorway / a-road with around 20 minutes traffic involved. The journey was in normal Auto mode (Not sport). On motorway use with little traffic I have seen the MPG average 35 or more. In town driving it hard in sport mode it has been as low as 10 -12. Conclusions, sport mode and traffic these things drink petrol at a fearsome rate. But its a big heavy fast car so to be expected. Its a 3.7 Quattro A8 on an 02 plate. Will22
I did 5k in two weeks going to Spain and back and I got 17.2 Over 3 hours was with the cruise set at 165mph Also when in Spain I had left the car running when parked a good bit as I needed the aircon in the heat, probably around 2-3 hours altogether. Odd's of not crossing the path of a cop for 3 hours at that speed is pretty slim imo.
Will22
It wasn't all in one go, the longest that I held that speed in one go was about 45 minutes. In the miles that I did I only seen one speed trap, it was in Bedar in Spain and the cop had the radar gun on the side window and he was asleep
Atomic
And what would have happened if your had been caught? Ban? Fine? Prison? What was the speed limit btw?
Will22
They'd have to catch me first It wouldn't the first time I was caught speeding and no points yet Speed limit was 85mph so not that much over
rothwell
In my experience of Spanish police, well traffic police anyway. They seem extremely relaxed and didn't pull me and 2 other cars in a convoy doing 120mph. I've seen plenty of cars going very very fast on Spanish highways. Best thing I ever saw was a Mercedes S-Class I can only presume it was an AMG. I was doing 120mph and it SHOT past completely rocked my car around. Nice... French police suck though. Atomic
So Spain is cool provided you can out run them but France Sucks... Or is that just the old UK/French thing???
rothwell
No French police do suck, they give you on the spot fines for just having a GB number plate almost. rothwell
[ QUOTE ] Remove your number plate? I like it! [/ QUOTE ] I meant no GB sticker or anything. However removing number plates would certainly resolve a few issue's with motoring, however would most likely generate more problems than it's worth. spencerbruntlett
Cant you get away with an EU sticker/number plate now? Thats what I had over in France anyway.
