SamD
So I am going to buy a personalised plate this week. Is there any reason for me to buy through a dealer rather than dvla-som direct? The DVLA direct route is about £40 cheaper, but I can't help but wonder if their service is any good (my DVLA dealings haven't been entirely positive over the years).. any opinions? DHA
DVLA SOM are separate from the DVLA I think. Seemed to be ok when I bought mine.
NewNiceMrMe
I bought mine from DVLA SOM 4 years ago and had no problems at all. If they have the plate you want, it's pointless going through a dealer just for them to add their premium on to it in my opinion.
Rustynuts
Go direct to DVLA-som. Do not pass go, do not collect £200 etc. All the dealer is going to do is charge you the same price as DVLA, but add vat on aswell, and that's how he makes his money. If it's a plate which is for sale already on a vehicle, the dealer might be the only way to get it as DVLA only sell unallocated plates as far as I know. If it's unallocated, DVLA are the ones to go to.
SamD
Nice one guys, I have my answer. Will be purchased first thing Monday
Oli
Yep DVLA is easy and the cheapest - www.dvlaregistrations.co.uk. You will have the certificate of entitlement through in a couple of days after payment. The end part of the telephone order is very tedious though, you'll know what I mean when you hear it
RedRobin
DVLA were great in my case and delivered within a few days. Not over priced either. I never planned to get a private plate and was just looking what my local standard plate would be like. A private plate gives a car special identity. I notice that lots of TSNers have them and most are seriously cool .
Ari
Yep, DVLA-som here and no probs at all, very easy and efficient.
AvantSE
DVLA - bought my plate a few months ago and it all went smoothly with no probs.
neilp
I've bought two at DVLA auctions and one from DVLA direct with no problems. I was offered the first plate I bought at auction by a dealer before it even went to auction for what turned out to be £2K over what I paid !! SamD
So assuming I manage to buy my reg tomorrow (which is the plan), where is the best place to get the plates made up? I would rather not use Halfords to be honest. Should I just ask my dealer to do them for me?
djcool
I've bought two from dealers and one from the DVLA. All gave good service and no cause for complaint, although the DVLA was cheaper. Unfortunately, the DVLA didn't have the plate I wanted twice so I had to go through a dealer. Did it all through the DVLA-SOM website, no hassle & no problems.
theduisbergkid
Got mine from the DVLA no probs either.
Pastit130
The addition of VAT on plates doesn't make a direct profit for the dealer as any VAT charged is passed to HMC&E. Mark-up makes profit. So if you can get the same plate cheaper at DVLA I'd go through them.
SamD
Just bought my new reg from the DVLA-SOM. Very simple (know what you mean about the end bit though OliH - very tedious!). Now I just have to wait 10 days for my certificate to appear and I can do the necessary to get it on the car!

As it happens they did them for nothing for me, but thats not why I was going to use them anyway (before I found out they refused to charge me). The reason is somewhat anal.....I like the car plates to have the dealership name on, and logos and badging, as if it had been supplied new with the plate on - just to keep that original OEM look. So, if it was me, I'd be off to the supplying Audi dealers! At the most it'll be about £25 anyway and they'll fit them too if you ask nicely. SamD
Might give that a try. I got on well with my dealer (he even came to my houe to pick up my insurance docs rather than have me travel to him) so it is possible I can convince him that it is in his interests to do it for free
patently
07 plates will be available soon - is anyone going to try a *0O7 *** plate? Or will it become the easiest way to spot the TO55ERS?

SamD
Well my V750 arrived this morning. Very impressed with the service from DVLA-SOM all in all Now the fun bit comes - getting it transferred. Not sure when I will manage to get to a DVLA office, so I think I will just do it by post.
