E46 Running Problems

4 posts in this topic

I have a 328 that will start fine tickover for about 5 seconds and die; as it dies it gets rougher and rougher; try to rev it and it just coughs and dies. All indications is that this is a fuel starvation problem, but can anyone help out there??

Remove the smaller cover on which there are fine silver lines, underneath which are the intake manifold and fuel rail, first press on the fuel rail valve while cranking the engine to see if there is any fuel. If so, then remove the rail with the injectors, plug the injectors in while holding it up and somebody cranking the engine to see if the injectors are beating.

But this also could be an airsupply issue so if the above tests are all positive, let me know!

This could be your fuel pump. This could also be your idle stabilizer. There could also be a hole in your intake somewhere after the air filter.

also to add to the above check the coil packs, any EML light? EML light and this kind of rough running stalling might be due to a dodgy coil or two, especially given the cold weather and it is a bit of a weak point on them.

another possibility is get the car fault code read you might find camshaft sensor on the fritz, i can't remember if you have inlet and exhaust camshaft sensors on that particular model, but it is known that when they are on the blink the car will start and then cut out randomly and at it's on will, especially just after starting. doesn't normally cause dog rough idling though prior to death so it might unfortunately be something more sinister fuel related.
