RedRobin gets Revo'd...

145 posts in this topic

Geoff > No problem, mate, and it's right that you can share your opinion be it good or bad about something. Your info actually confirms that Revo weren't always as good as they are now.

nutkins > I'm not having the same problem as you. Have you spoken to your tuner or Revo about it or are you waiting a bit longer to see what happens? I might understand it better if you had Stage2 and had changed the settings yourself but even then I'm not sure this problem would happen.

They get them in the USA when they buy a GTI.

Its a promotion at the moment, not fare.

They even get an AUX socket in the glovebox to play it through the car stereo lol.

Robin - I'm going to wait a little longer to see if it settles down. As far as I'm aware though the Stage 1 code is the Stage 1 code so it shouldn't really be any different on my car etc. Perhaps I'm being a little fussy and it might be a characteristic of the extra power but as I say it doesn't feel quite right.

If the car battery is ever disconnected, you need to reload the Revo twice in a particular sequence (easier than I've made it sound!).

[/ QUOTE ]

hmm, I would have thought that the remap would remain stored on the flash memory chip even if the battery is disconnected. I don't think that you have to flash the chip after repeated battery disconnections on the standard car.

any explainations on why things are different with a remap? confused.gif

This isn't strictly true. Even if a car is re-mapped to Stage 1, the indivdual tuner has discretion over settings such as timing advance. I would suggest a PM to RevoKev for confirmation.

petsy - The remap does remain stored but after the battery has been disconnected and then reconnected you need to activate the Performance program as if the map had been Stock previously. It's literally a 10-second job with the Revo switch unit. Perhaps I should have written "activate" instead of "load" in my earlier post.

Robin, who are you insured with that doesn't charge for the remap? Did they charge extra for the other mods?

Cheers.

Over fueling over a period of time would cause horrendous carbon deposits to accumulate, ultimately causing the engine to misbehave and possibly break, goodness only knows what the damage to the expensive cat converter would be?

Revo in my time as a TT owner were known for going for power as the ultimate goal. An increase in torque of close 50% seems downright excessive without any major engine mods. If there is over fueling (and I am not suggesting that there is) and 40-50% extra power, the life of the engine might not be 200,000 miles.

In order to cope with the extra hike in power, the Anniv edition has had extra work on the engine to cope and not just a remap. This clearly suggests that the integrity of the engine could be compromised?

VW build and test these engines, Revo don't, although the remap is probably tested on a couple of cars prior to its general release.

Good luck with the remap, I certainly would like to have it done, but I could not afford a new engine and the legal bid to recoup my cash if it all went horribly wrong.

If you speak to Kevin at Revo I think you'll be reassured that Revo nowadays go for driveability regarding remaps for road cars. However, I do take your point about a very substantial increase in the torque but +36% (my plot) is not nearly 50% and you also need to factor-in that VW usually build-in a +40% 'headroom'. It's also relevant that Abt, who I believe work very closely with VW, also limit the torque in their remaps to the same 300 ft.lb level as Revo, as do some other tuners.

I'm not saying that Revo's remap is bullet proof but having researched the subject specifically for the GTI 2.0T FSI before taking the plunge, I'm confident. My power (bhp) increase appears to be very modest at 224 bhp though it's expected to rolling road at about 245 bhp when settled.

In modifying the engine for the Ed30, VW will doubtless still be building-in the +40% 'headroom'. But what other engine mods do you know of in the new Anni other than a larger turbo?

I have only gone for Stage1, which is less aggressive.

I fully appreciate your caution, Tunner. 169144-ok.gif

....DirectLine, but bear in mind that I have been driving 40 years and have a good insurance record. I don't think it's necessarily their overall policy not to add extra premium for a power increase and it will also depend what that increase is in bhp terms.

No extra premiums for any of my mods but some extra excess on some. ALL are listed on my policy document 169144-ok.gif.

The MTM chip which is VW-approved and warranty-compliant has similar increases in power (147-->175/180kw) and torque (280-->350Nm) as the REVO stage 1. That chip is used with the standard engine has been running for quite a long time on our elite police unit (Scorpions) cars.

Modifications include a larger turbocharger, reinforced pistons and engine block, strengthened connecting rods, a new ultra heat-resistant alloy for the cylinder head, plus larger injectors.

....Ooops! More than I expected. Cheers for info 169144-ok.gif.

The big question is should I now be worried ??

nah you have nothing to worry about really.

Kev is a good bloke.

I know quite a few people with cars Revo'd by Kev and have run them for over 3 years with no problems, engine or transmission. They even get some good mpg figures.

Great news that they didn't up your premium. But I'm sure that won't be the case for the majority. Boo hoo.

Robin 169144-ok.gif Bear in mind that Revo cannot afford all the negative press that would go with a series of GTI's going 'bang' in 1k, 5k, 20k miles time etc - their business depends upon the "peers effect" i.e. someone gets a remap, they tell their mates, they post on TSN etc.

There are no guarantees that it will behave perfectly forever but name me a car that has such a blessing ? Enjoy it mate 169144-ok.gif
