RossG
Another random RossG question folks. For a couple of weeks now I have noticed a clunking / clanging noise coming from the front left when sterring at low speeds. I thought it sounded like a broken spring, but the dealers have said it's the strut top. Now, how much should this cost to fix? They have quoted me £150 - and the part is only £17. Is this right? Oh, and is it damaging the car to be driving on it, as I don't really have a choice, and have quite a lot of miles to do next week Thanks in advance guys... dogbucket
Mine have been replaced under warranty so far, but it is going back next week for a complete new strut after they mangled the top allen key fitting replacing the bearing last month (bearing has failed again mind you) I think it is a couple of hours labour so for a main dealer sounds about right. However I will check my bill when I get home. You should be ok to drive it for a while.
rs32
Hi Ross - is there not a good independent specialist up your way that won't rip you off for VW Dealer labour charges ?
RossG
Yup, used them to fit my brake discs. Called this morning and waiting for them to call me back with a price. The clanking / clunking is begining to drive me mad - so despite the pain in the assness of taking the car to the garage and having to get a taxi into work, it needs to be done. I'm getting worried about any potential damage that driving on it may be doing - but I need to use the car. Rock and a hard place eh
dogbucket
my last invoice says 3 hours to change one side although they might of just put that to screw VW warranty.
Mook
You can replace the top strut mounts inside an hour if that's all you're doing, but VW dealers have guide times for doing specific jobs, so that's what you'll pay. Like Rich says, try to find a good local VW specialist.
dogbucket
I was looking at the Bentley manual and I recon I will do it myself in future
RossG
A quick update folks. I had my mount changed by the local specialist yesterday. In the end it was just over £100 - as it took them a while to get it off. They showed me it - proper fecked it looked, all mangled and rusted, and half the bearings were missing. But ... The clunking is still there, although not quite as bad. I wonder if it is maybe a broken spring or something. At least that would be covered by Warranty Direct. I also need to speak to the specialist, as I didn't have time for a chat when I collected the car, and it may be that he has noticed something else with the suspension. If he hasn't then goodness knows what is causing the clunking ...

The guy form there who's still trying to sell me their package consistently tell me how good the 'wear and tear' cover is.
