Mk4 Engine death

Last night while driving my engine cut out and wouldn't restart. Whilst waiting for the AA I did a VAG-COM scan which showed the following fault codes:

7 Faults Found:

16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

P0300 - 008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

16685 - Cylinder 1: Misfire Detected

P0301 - 008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

16689 - Cylinder 5: Misfire Detected

P0305 - 008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

16687 - Cylinder 3: Misfire Detected

P0303 - 008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

17755 - Camshaft Position Sensor 2 (G163) / Engine Speed Sensor (G28): Incor. Correl.

P1347 - 002 - Lower Limit Exceeded - Intermittent

17745 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40): Short to Ground

P1337 - 002 - Lower Limit Exceeded

17799 - Camshaft Position Sensor Bank 2 (G163): Short to Ground

P1391 - 002 - Lower Limit Exceeded

The ever AA diagnosed a snapped timing chain, although the chain still looks intact under the oil filler cap (it just doesn't move.

Has anybody ever heard of a similar issue and what the problem is?

Thanks from one very sad R32 owner confused.gif

Think I've asked the question before, but are you supposed to change the timing chain at any point in the engine's life to prevent this kind of thing happening?

[/ QUOTE ]

They are non service items i.e are designed to last the life of the engine 169144-ok.gif

I had heard about premature engine wear around the timing chain and timing gear when I bought my .:R. The genral concensus of opinion is that the longlife servicing was to blame, so I have taken mine off longlife now.

Didnt R32guy off uk mk iv's have a similar problem, not until after he had his turbo conversion fitted, but he also had an AMD stage 4, so maybe the fitment of the cams had something to do with it confused.gif

I'm postive someone posted on here about a snapped cam chain before, and no it wasn't me grin.gif result was a new engine obviously, tho with having the AMD stage 4 this will no doubt void the warrenty, i hope having that didn't cause the engine to die crazy.gif and the cost of having a replacment engine and labour etc...£6500+ EEK2.GIF thats what mine came to last time round...

VW had the car today and confirmed a snapped cam chain. They also said that i have bent some valves as you would expect. Tomorrow they are going to take the head + gearbox off and confirm how bad the damage is.

Currently I’m denying sekret.gif engine mods besides the CAI in the hope that i might be able to get some sort of good will (warranty ran out in November). I’ve spoke to several people and nobody has heard of this happening before.

For the time being it looks very expensive. Already can’t wait to get it back! But if i do get a new engine i’m not looking forward to the running in or the drop in power shocked.gif

One question is, if they change the engine, will the ECU get changed? I’m sure the stage 4 code wont like a stock engine....

I was only going 45-50 in 6th gear so was just idling. There was no banging or grinding. The engine just cut out and wouldn't start (still nothing nasty besides miss-firing).

I still don't know what i want. On the one hand, i just want the car back ASAP with the same power. On the other, a nice new engine with ZERO miles would be nice (its done 54k now). Although it would be going back to AMD once run in, i just know it'll feel too slow without.

Whatever happens, there's nothing else out there i want to swap to right now so i'll be keeping it for the time being.

I still have a bad feeling that this afternoons phone call wont be good frown.gif

An update at the end of play today is that i have at least 8 bent valves. They are still to look at the valve guides but they said there was no damage to the pistons laugh.gif

The tech said the cog on the crank was badly worn and he thought that was the cause of the failure. I only have 54k miles so some of you with lower milage cars might want to bear this in mind.

They are currently prepairing a price list and i'll get a call tomorrow.

Besides the clutch is there anything else i might want doing whilst the engine and gear box are out the car?

Jimmy may know better, but that suggests to me that your car suffered from the crankshaft end float / incorrectly shaped bearing that meant a few of us on here had new engines ...

It's something to explore - maybe also by having a specialist such as APS examine it - because that would indicate to me that VW should pay all your costs 169144-ok.gif

I would say Ross isn't far off there, i would get them to measure the "float" first off and find out the measurement then i would be seriously asking questions to why this happened! A worn cog just isn't a good enough answer! I would hazard a guess that possibly you may have had incorrecty specced thrust bearings, the dreaded cause to the exsessive endfloat/crankshaft problem.

Did you suffer form any engine rattles, clonks or the clutch feeling heavy after a long motorway drive (after left in a gear for a while) or the gear changes being very notchy??

I would definitely ask for the fylwheel to be replaced as this is/should come part of the clutch kit aswell as the release bearing.

And as Ross says, getting a specialists such as APS to have a look wouldn't be a bad thing either... 169144-ok.gif

Sorry to hear of your bad luck Rocket Man -know how you feel frown.gif.

Had a 306 GTI-6,and snapped cambelt at 50k, only doing 10-20mph. Pistons fine, but needed 8 valves. Cost £1300 (£1000 labour). Even though was 3 years out of warranty, got main dealer to pay for the lot, as had full pug SH.

Hope you get it fixed soon, and get it run in.

Nothing like that at all. I've tried listening for the rattles of death after you had your issues Jimmy.

The only sign i got were a few split-second flat spots that appeared during the final week, and these were only while accelerating hard. Oh and i'm told it sounded a bit rough when i set off on my final journey. Unfortinately i had decided to try some Tesco 99 and put it all down to the car not liking the fuel. BIG mistake there.....

They checked the float today and they say it's "well within what it should be".

[/ QUOTE ]

did they give you the figures mate as i was told that, then i asked for the figures realised it really wasn't well within the limit, they said no its fine, then a week later they were installing a new engine smashfreakB.gif

No they didn't. I'll get it in the morning and then ask around. I was going to ask that the figure be put in the paper work anyway.

Hopefully when i get home tomorrow I’ll have my R32 Die cast model. That should keep me a little entertained till the real thing returns. Cue the dodgy child-like Milltek sounds smile.gif
