Corroded Monza 18s....

oh dear i have a couple of worms. So frustrated, i just cant be bothered with these hassles and difficulties with the dealers and getting them sorted. This wheel has one circle of white on the edge, 2 wiggly worms 6 inches further along on the very edge again, and then another white blob a few inches further along. Its nowhere near as bad as yours red but i expect a new one because in my view it is faulty and thats what the warranty is for confused.gifconfused.gifconfused.gifconfused.gifconfused.gif

It might be interesting to compare how people have cared for their Monza II's. From reading the various posts it seems pretty random as to when the worms attack - as if it's just a matter of luck.

I have had mine for 11 months and completed 11,000 miles. Mine get washed every week and I also use AutoGlym alloy wheel seal on them every week. So far the worms have yet to appear (except on 1 centre cap) but I realise it's very early days for me and I've only been through 1 winter with them.

It would be interesting to hear how people who have had their Monza II's a long time have looked after them. After all, I think I'm right in saying the manual recommends they are regularly waxed. It was interesting to read Ken33's post above saying that he had hardly ever cleaned them but they were as good as new.

My main concern is that if I am just delaying the inevitable worm invasion then I will be making it more difficult for myself to claim on warranty later in the warranty period.

Does anyone know what the warranty period would be on replacement wheels - is it another 3 years from the date of replacement? Somehow I doubt it but I'll be happy to be corrected.

On the subject of a recall, I don't think VW would bother. Most of the Monza II's I see in the real world have parking scuffs on them or are filthy. I honestly don't think most owners would a)know what the worms were or b)care. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh but I think we are a bit more enthusiastic about our cars on this website than most owners are.

Hi Steve, I don't wax mine (the wheels that is grin.gif) and only use shampoo (now Viro-Sol), rinse and dry. It didn't stop the worm. I wash my wheels much more often than the whole car. Perhaps I should have waxed them.

Yes, we are deffo more enthusiastic than non-TSN owners - People generally try and clean their car for a meet, though it's not essential.

I spotted some white spots / blobs on 2 of my wheels the other week and they are being replaced this week but on checking my other wheels they too appear to have the marks too so will be getting these replaced also.

I didnt clean my wheels as much as I should have over the winter, maybe this has had an effect on them...

Just a thought , do they still put salt on the roads in the UK during winter ? , I now in Rep of Ireland we use grit rather than salt. Would this have any impact as I know the salt can cause rust in some cases. Anyway I'm no expert just sharing a theory !

How do you guys clean your wheels?

I initially jet wash mine, then sponge them and then rinse them off with the jet wash again, could this be the cause of all my wheels having to be replaced due to white marks appearing? Could jet washing cause any damage to the lacquer? I dont jet wash them at point blank range obviously, but close enough to remove any dirt / soap.

Im getting them replaced this week but want to avoid having the white marks appear again!

I firstly gently caress grin.gif my wheels with a water hosepipe. And then spray with Viagrasol (Viro-Sol from Kite). I never use a sponge for any part of my car but a Meguiars Wheel Brush. Then trickle the hose again before drying by hand with a waffle magnet cloth. And I still got the fecking white worms!!

It's only a minor cosmetic so I'm going to simply have them professionally painted instead of diamond-cut with clear lacqueur when they get bad enough. It's not worth my while trying to fight the warranty issues in my particular case.

Hi Oli,

No, Euroimports sounded sympathetic but said all they could have done was refer me to VW UK but they also wouldn't accept the wheels being separated from the original car.

I've given up on that route - None of these dealers, VW or importer, will stand by the product. It's simply not worth my further effort - I'm going to wait until they've got worse and bung 'em all in to Lepsons, or similar, for a complete strip and repaint in something nice like lustre gunmetal or even the same silver as the Monza 17". I'm quite looking forward to it.

Taking the car in for its second service on friday, I'm trying a different dealer who i've heard great things about but its 20 mins away instead of 4. I asked if i could email some photos of my one wheel with a problem and today I got a lovely email back saying a wheel has been ordered and they will fit it on friday with my service jump.gif.

Now maybe its time to treat the car to some r32 rear light clusters, dealer seems very good, the second service is £185 and £45 for brake fluid which seems quite reasonable to me

I've been speaking to Lepsons today and they have a paint finish which sounds very exciting (and it's not pink!! grin.gif). Takes a few days though, so I'll have to use my old 17's (Thank goodness my AP big brakes fit!). I'll visit there and report but I'm thinking that I should wait until the 'Winter'.....If I can wait that long!!
