iambaz
Hi, I am picking up a 2002 plate S3 this week. It has above average miles but I seem to have got it for a reasonable price - maybe a little too reasonable! Im not very mechanically minded, could anyone advise me on what kind of things to check for on the S3 before I hand my cash over? Help apreciated! harddrive
Unscrew the oil filler cap on the engine and look inside the cap. Make sure that there is no mayonaise looking material as this could indicate a head gasket problem. Mayo is formed when water gets into the oil. iambaz
Is that a bad thing? I usually have Mayo with everything anyway! Thanks for the tip mate! I will do that! Clutch and cambelt seem to be problematic with audis (I had my cambelt go on one just last year ) are there any tell tale signs that either of these may be on their way out? winrya
although in this weather, if the car is used for short trips it will almost definately have some mayo residue under the cap
Tunbridge
Worth giving the gear box some abuse to check everything is as it should be. The synchromesh went on my second gear and I believe AzureS3 had a similar problem with his car. Mine used to ‘grind’ the gears when downshifting into 2nd when there was a few revs on. A rare fault but worth checking as it won’t be a cheap fix (luckily Audi picked up the bill for mine)
iambaz
Cheers for the tip Tunbridge. Will do that.
S3ENVY
Yeah, I'm with Tunbridge on that one too. Think our both went at the same time! Boxes are a little notchy but you shouldn't have to use excessive force when slotting into gear.
