1998 vw golf mark 4 gearbox issues

please can ayone tell me if the gearbox in a 1600cc 1998 mark 4 golf is the same as the 1800cc gearbox from a 1998 passat.

any help would be greatly appreciated 169144-ok.gif

I would say no. Only because, when you look at various gear stuff for the Golf, you always get the option "All petrol models (except 1.4 & 1.6)"

Implying that there's something different about those gearboxes.

You don't have a 1.6 8v (100bhp) do you? At about 60,000miles?

They're two different gearboxes. The Golf engine and gearbox are mounted transversely, i.e. the engine and gearbox layout are left to right as you look at the car.

In the Passat, the engine and gearbox are longitudinally laid out, i.e. front to back.

If you're thinking of changing the gearbox and you can't find a Mk4 one, try the Audi A3 option as well.
