Not far off a post every 2 miles then coffee.gif RR

.... grin.gif How many posts-per-gallon does that compute to then? About 14 ppg I reckon coffee.gif

But on the subject of learning DSG I would suggest a newbie simply relaxes and gets used to each mode one by one before combining the options on offer. Some of us only use D, some only D and S, some just M plus paddles, others M plus floorstick, and others a combination according to conditions and mood. It's also easy to switch from one to another set of options. Can't go directly from M to S though, unfortunately, but you can even override D or S modes for 30 seconds.

Don't let anyone convince you it's like a Playstation - Believe me, DSG can be just as involving as a conventional Manual. The GTI isn't a rally car but why do rally cars have paddle shifts?

It might have a more expensive clutch system but I reckon that clutch wear is greatly reduced (and gear shifts are fast and faultless every time - Well, 99.9%). DSG is worth the extra in my opinion.

Thanks Red for your input and snoopy I will do a search on the forum for the post. I am looking forward to the experience, I will leave it in D for the first 1000 miles and then experiment, RR do you need to stop the car to swap it from M to S or do you push stick to D then Drop to S on the move?

I might sound daft but its worth to ask the question.

You guessed it - while on the move you just shift the stick to the side (from M to D) and then down a slot from (D to S). 169144-ok.gif

Can't say I really ever need to do that change much though

I just use the stamp down or whatever it's called and it does the same job at exactly the same time that you start accelerating, the trick of course is to time it so all that happens and allows the boost to build back up so you can move over quickly and easily. ECLIPSe.gif

....No, it'll take less learning than you imagine. It'll just take time to become naturally fluid so you don't even think about it anymore. Just keep it simple and try one option at a time to start with - The DSG box of tricks is your friend 169144-ok.gif.

cheers Red for your words and advice, I cant wait till the car arrives but its still going to be a very very long wait.

There is FAQ here (from another site) :-

DSG FAQ

Some of the threads I remember on here about DSG are over a year old now and the ones I've found are here 169144-ok.gif :-

From a personal perspective I think the DSG is perfect for the GTI's "torquey" engine and I love the flexibility that the DSG offers. Depending on the mood you're in and the roads you're driving on you have the option of so many driving styles. One of my favourites must be manual mode and using the paddles on twisty 40-70mph country roads grin.gif. Unfortunately I work in a city and my daily commute is stop / start in queues frown.gif - but that's when Drive mode comes into it's own
