AWD on a BMW saloon...............



BMW has released full details of the M sport package for its 7-Series, plus details of the 740d and 730d.


A newly developed twin-turbo straight six diesel engine will be appearing in the 740d, while BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system will also be available in the range for the first time.



At the bottom end of the range, BMW claims that the 730d is “the world’s most economical and lowest emission model in the luxury class (achieved) by a further reduction in both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions”.
A new M Sport package will also be available across the entire range.
BMW’s new twin-turbo straight six diesel engine is made entirely from aluminium and features high-pressure common-rail direct injection to maximise efficiency and reduce emissions.


It is the first time BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology has appeared in one of its production cars.


In the 740d, it produces 302bhp and 442lb ft between 1500 and 2500 rpm, while 0-62mph is a claimed 6.3secs and top speed is limited to 155mph.
Fuel economy will be a claimed 40.9mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions will be 181g/km, both “new records for performance efficiency in this performance class” say BMW.
The Euro 6 compliant 730d can be chosen with BMW BluePerformance Technology. This technology reduces nitric oxide gas emissions to a standard not compulsory in the EU until 2014.
CO2 emissions in the 730d are 178g/km, while average fuel consumption is a claimed 41.5mpg.


BMW’s xDrive system, seen in its X models, will feature in the 750i and 750Li. The all-wheel drive system will distribute the twin-turbo V8’s 401bhp power thorough a multi-plate clutch. This makes the car nimbler and more stable, while also reducing understeer.


The top-of-the-range 760i and 760Li will again be powered by a powerful V12 unit. 760 exclusive features include BMW Individual roof lining in alcantara anthracite as well as wood trim.


BMW M Sports packages will start at around £1000, and include options such as 20inch light-alloy wheels, chrome trim, leather sports seats and Carbon Black metallic paint.


The packages are available on all short and long wheelbase 7-Series. Prices for the 730d are expected to start at around £55,000 when it goes on sale later this year.
