Default NOS installation

For a laugh I was thinking about maybe getting a NOS kit fitted to my Volvo XC90. It will cost about £500 for a remap, so I was thinking instead of doing that could I get a decent NOS installation for the same/less cost?

What sort of performance increase would I get on a 2.5 Diesel engine (automatic) with a normal 0-60 of around 12 seconds?

Is NOS road legal, and does anybody on here have NOS installed?

You, my friend, are mad!!

NOS is a proven performance improver, but its only a short term fix as you need to keep refilling the tank.
If you go for it, make sure the fitters know what they;re doing otherwis its bye bye engine or worse case bye bye XC.

For reliability and flexibilty I'd go for a decent remap

The NOS kits of today are much better than a few years back.

The old days used to be a floor mounted actuator so that when you floored it you got a NOS shot, or more basic still a hand operated valve!!

Nowadays NOS can be bought with seperate ECU's to map the NOS according to engine load etc. Some people even have a completely new ECU mapping NOS and Fuel simultaneously.

To be honest though NOS wont have a huge impact on a diesel. Most diesels run lean, therefore adding NOS (An oxidiser) won't really help!

There are some nutters about who have tried propane injection!

Best bang for buck is a remap IMHO.

A remap just sounds a bit boring Only adds about 30bhp so not sure if it's worth it. General performance on the car is fine, would just be nice to have a little bit of fun at the lights when something fast pulls up alongside my big 4x4

I think a Cold Fusion single 20lB install dry comes in at about 400, and will give a temporary increase of about 50BHP. If you give POTN a bell, they should give you some advice on it, but I would recommend just going for dry if you dont want to spend 000's on strengthening the block. there was a kit somewhere, will try and find you some numbers.

Nitrous IMO is a lame performance additive for the road.If your main goal is quick as possible quarter miles then NOS at the end of all other tuning avenues is worthwhile. The trouble with using it on the road is that it'll get to the stage where you'll just use it at any time a quickish car tries to get the better of you. That cannister will end up needing a refill every week making the running costs high and defeating the object of having a diesel.
What you have to remember is that diesel tuning is not about horsepower. You say that you'll only get 30 brake with a remap. In a petrol car I'd agree that isn't much in the scheme of things but what you have to look at is the torque increase on a oil burner. It's probably pretty huge(much bigger than horsepower gain)and will transform the cars capabilities.A diesel(535D aside)will never be a master of traffic light Grand Prix's,but with the remap it'll certainly have some mid-range grunt that will be a nice surprise.(to you, and others )
Remap is definately the way to go!

Cheers guys... remap looks like the way to go. Have to wait until around September until after our holiday to see how much cash we have left. Or more to the point, how much space on the credit card is left
