Hi
I have blown the engine, but have recently bought a complete Passat AWX engine at a very good price. If I was to strip the Passat Engine back to the block and head, and fitted all of my parts from my AJM engine would it be possible to drop this into my golf? I realise that the AWX passat engine is mounted differently, but im guessing that the head and block would be the same? Any ideas? Cheers taff |

The mounting points on the engine block are different. You wouldn't have any mounting points in the correct place to hold it insitu.

Best I can suggest (as I think you're going to be out of luck) is to have a look at the mountings on both units, and see if they're going to work.
From looking at the tech drawings of the 2 engines the Passat has mountings on both sides of the block. The holes are cast into the block for the engine mounts to connect to. If you turn this engine longitudinally, then the front mounts (ex passenger side) won't be needed, but the other mount points will have to be there aswell. As far as the engine similarities go, you'll need to use your existing gearbox, driveshafts, clutch, and probably flywheel aswell. You'll need the ecu from the Passat engine, a fuel pump to go in the fuel tank, and a whole load of other stuff either swapped, bought, robbed, scrounged from the old engine etc. and realistically it's not going to be a worthwhile (or even possible) venture. If it was a PD engine from a Golf or a Bora, I could see some light at the end of the tunnel, but as it stands you've just got too much to change and hope for to make it worthwhile.

Hi should have updated this post months ago.................The Passat Engine went into my golf without any probs, stripped back the engine to the block, swapped sumps as they are different. even had to use the cambelt cover from my ajm as the mounting point goes through the side. Anyway in short the Passat Engine once stripped back to the bare block and head and rebuilt with my AJM parts i.e sump, oil cooler, turbo etc etc dropped into my car fine. The only concern was the injectors but it seems to be going ok, maybe just a touch smoky, fuel comsumption is better slightly. Done over 5000 miles with this now, no probs...............
If you think about it...... VW are not gonna spend millions developing a pd engine, to go into x y z model cars, then decide they will make another cast so they can fit the exact same engine the other way around into a passat not finacially viable. |
