This is where it kind of comes unstuck. The GTI will be lowered and have big wheels, nice interior etc, but something like 90% of the Golfs sold will look like this (except without the alloys).

Bland

Looks good, I think.

VW don't have to go radical for the Golf. Not like Ford with the change from pants Escort to Focus (which is still pants IMHO), and from box Fester to swoopy Fester. Vx have gradually evolved the Astra shape, and VW have done slightly less shape evolving than Vx.

Or do you want a few more chromey/matt black/shiny black bits for higher models?

I'd like to see something to differentiate it from the other Euro boxes around. The GTI is by far the best front end of the Mk5 - they've repeated it on the GT models.

But now they've killed off that style of front end and gone back to beige.

Snoopy - I agree to a degree, Mk3 to Mk4 was dull (I had a few of both!). But, as with all the other manufacturers, they need to give something to get people to go from teh Mk5 to the Mk6 if they're to keep their sales figures up.

Cruiser - go drive a warm or hot Feckus - regardless of what they look like, the handling is great

Yes, the handling is good (I was impressed), but the ride (my Bora rides better!), interior, dash and exterior were all below parr. However, that was a standard 1.6, but I doubt the interior changes much for a better model and the exterior is still ugly in my eyes.
Doors felt tinny and the dash/fascia was not well built at all.
So that has put me right off them.

Agreed, but they're a shed load better than an Astra as a hire car

edit... Vx have gradually evolved the Astra shape
Yes, into a repulsive looking chav-wagon, which looks incredibly cheap and plasticy. All IMO of course.
