Been looking at one of these as a second car, does anyone own one?
What's your view on them and what kind of MPG do you get from it? Cheers

I had the 140bhp 1.4 TSI (twincharger) Golf. Really liked it and sold it to my parents in the end.
Superb engine - quite punchy and good for 40mpg all day long. The 170 can only be even better! I'd definitely have another. ![]()

Stick with the 140 version. I have tried the VW Golf and my Dad has a Leon TSI (125ps I think). Both are a bit slower than my 170 but because of the torque, they don't feel that much slower.
The 170 is no where near as smooth as the 140 version, any acceleration at low revs gives a massive dead spot then the turbo comes in with a bang, lift off a little and the turbo cuts out..jerky jerky all the way home. Once I have mine paid off it will be gone! FYI, I found the Leon TSI quieter, more economical, much smoother box, resting placing for right and left foot when cruise is on, no auto wipers (hate those things). My Dad also paid a lot less than I did for a NEW car and I would take his anyday! |

Agree with Dr W., test drove a 170 TSI DSG and it was all or nothing. The supercharger disengages at low rpm so instead of a nice low down pick up there's a horrible pause where it just feels like a normally aspirated 1.4...
When the supercharger did kick in it seemed to be all mouth and no trousers, noise but no power. Turbo time arrived at 4k rpm... It was great but dropped off easily and ruined the fuel economy. The long term average on the car I drove was approx 30mpg for circa 3,000 miles. I suspect the DSG may have played a part; I really wanted to like it but it felt like it was neutering this engine. The diesels are much better in the GT Sport Golfs in my opinion, you just have to put up with the awful PD engine clatter. Much more noticeable than in your A4. I'd go for a slightly older GTI! |

Hi all i'm new too this group, so please excuse my negative first post!
I own a 2007 VW Golf 1.4 tsi (170) it was good for the first 5000 miles, now it has done 30,000 in the previous 25k miles i have had... a new gear box, (problems from 3rd to 2nd downshift), Leaky Roof, still not fixed. Fuel Gauge stuck on full, still not fixed CAT CONV gone, Still not Fixed Bottom End of engine rattling, Still not Fixed And a mysterious rattleing from the rear of the car, that no-one can find. There is more but i wont bother you, N.B! The car is very well looked after, full VW service, oil checked twice weekly (it has to be)! I dont drive it hard i cant where i live its too muddy! If any of you have managed too read this essay, could you let me know if these are common problems as VW say they are RARE! and what level of Warrenty Quality do you get? Cheers James, |
