Default Golf MKIV Problems

Come on then, I fancy a chuckle. Those of you with MKIVs or who know people with, what sort of trouble have you had with 'em?

I reckon I had 90% of whatever you post in the 3 years that I had mine....

I used to have a MK3 GTI convertible.. and what I remember very well was the electrics were pants!! Sometimes it wouldn't start for no reason at all, 5 mins later it'd be ok, driving along and it'd suddenly go dead on the dashboard, the electric windows were temperamental (changed the switches bout 5times)... the amount of times I got soaked . Then just as the sun started shining it'll decide to work. Grrr
Apart from the electrics... didnt really have any problems

Up until yesterday, we only had one minor problem in 2½ years, and that was one of the keys losing its coding, resulting in the car (and all keys) having to go into the dealers to be reprogrammed.

Yesterday, the clutch pedal played up, but was soon fixed on advice from someone in the MkIVs forum.

That's it - 30 months of almost trouble-free motoring (although it's only done 12K miles in that time).

Seems I spoke too soon.

The aircon compressor isn't working now. Dealer had it in for a day and couldn't find the fault, but regassed it anyway (still not working though). It's now booked in for a two-day stint next week for them to strip out the dash (for some reason) to try to locate the fault.

Not only that, but the ABS & traction control warning lights came on the day after it was in at the dealers. Fortunately, after an overnight rest, they haven't reappeared.

Wish I'd not cancelled that R32 order now

Lemme See if i can recall:

Rear windscreen wiper motor failed. Twice in first 6 months.
Leak from Aircon into Footwell
Leak from Aircon via central vents
Window regulators - 2 in 5 days (£350!!)
Window regulators - driver's side failed 53 weeks later (Goodwill)
Crack in relay box - wouldn't start
MAF Sensor replaced
Flywheel replaced
Clutch-release bearing screeching
Creaking door locks (perennial)
Both main headlight bulbs failed within 10 months (not a warranty issue apparently!)
Light in boot stopped working - microswitch problem
Excessive smoking (lol) god knows what they did to fix that

there's more I am sure, but i have managed to forget!

I have a sort of warbling squeaking noise coming from the front wheels when I steer left or right (not a loud screeching). Took it to my dealers who said they couldn't hear anything after a full day of testing it - pretty strange as I heard it within 1/2 mile of leaving their bodyshop after I collected my car !!!! Anyone got any ideas ? And yes, I have had my ears syringed recently.

Boot warning light always on
Creaking everything
Clutch housing broke - 4 month wait for replacement
Windows went up and down only when THEY wanted to
Central locking worked only when IT wanted to
2 exhausts blown
Broken central ventilation unit
Service warning light always came on - probably dealers fault
Power steering faulty

Problem after problem!
