Default Squeaking noise on my Golf

Hi Guys,

My '52 reg tdi130 Golf has very recently developed a rather annoying and rather loud squeak coming from the nearside of the car. I can't distinguish if its front or rear but I do know it makes a lot of noise. Any pointers what to look at? Anything common like this?

The car has done a well looked after 61K btw.

Had a look underneath (as best I could) tonight and it seems to be coming from the middle of the car where the exhaust middle bit is.

I haven't got any ramps and have never been underneath my car properly to have a look so does anyone know if there is some sort of rubber hanger thing supporting the exhaust or what?

Why would this suddenly start making a noise? I'm the only one that drives it and I know I haven't grounded on anything.

Random squeeking is often caused by worn anti-roll bar bushes. The front ones sit about a foot in from each side, which may be why it sounds like it's coming from the middle of the car. Rear ones go more often as they get covered in cr*p.

When you say worn, how would I know (apart from if it was squeaking) that it was worn?

Is the movement quite noticable?

I don't suppose anyone has a picture/layout for what I should be looking for?

No - it's bloody difficult to tell whether or not there's movement. You can remove the bushes and use some silicon lube spray on them, but it'll come back.

Maybe see what your local VW Specialist thinks?

This is the problem, I haven't got a specialist within 1-2 hours of me

Anyhooooo, I got hold of some ramps and put the car up on them and it seems the part (highlighted in attachment) is what is to blame for my squeaking.

The exhaust pipe (A) is rubbing on part (B) everynow and then. Part (B) can rotate on the shaft as shown in direction (C).

Is something missing here or what? I tilted it slightly which has made the noise not so bad but its still there.

Can someone else with a golf mk4 have a look at theirs when they get the chance please and tell me whats going on?

Heres the same picture but zoomed out so you can tell where on the exhaust i'm talking about

The brick in the distance is the front wheel.

Thumbs up

Hello my first post so go easy on me.

I have the same problem as above with the squeaking, it satrted of with just a little but now it's very loud.

It only happens when driving and when i turn the steering wheel just slightly to the left or right any further and it stops.

Any ideas?

Was the pictures above the culprit?

Thanks in advance

Oh my car is the same as above golf tdi 130 on a 52 plate done 60000 miles

I know it was the exhaust causing my squeaking, its gone away again now so haven't had it looked at as I know as soon as someone gives it a shake it will be back again.

It would only squeak though if I went round a bend and not just turning the steering wheel slightly, might be worth getting under your car and giving the exhaust a shake to see if you can replicate it.
