Default Mk V GTI Build Quality?

Hi All,
I'm thinking of a GTI as my next car and just wondered what real owner's think of the GTI's build quality? I'd heard that some owners had rattly doors? Is this a common problem? (I have a pet hate for rattles!). Ideally, I'd like to believe that VW build quality is as "hewn from granite" as its cracked up to be - but I'm not so sure..... What's it really like guys?

I've had mine 5 months now, and really had just minor sqeeks from the bedding in of the car, so overall it's as expected in my case. I've found the cuase in my car and it's a small trim piece in joining the A pillar to the dash, a small piece fo felt has fixed the problem without a return to the dealer. Of course you will always get the odd issue in some cars.

No car on the planet will be hewn from Granite mate, even a Bentley.
It's luck of the draw. I've suffered terribly rattly golfs and A3's in the past, and equally i've had some that have been as quiet as a mouse.
Do you know what the most rattly car i've ever been in was, A ferrari F355!

my front doors are pretty rattly on and off.... drives me bananas when it happens, but it's specific to certain surfaces. VW have "fixed" it a few times but it returns. they have ordered new doors for me after i emailed their regional head a few times... seems a bit overkill

Cheers for the responses guys. I'm not naive enough to expect total integrity in a car, but I do like a car to feel solid, and not a plastic mess of rattly trim! Audi are always proclaimed as world leaders in build quality, so it would be interesting to see if VW's can compare - especially as most people seem to think cabin quality in the Mk V isn't as good as the Mk IV. - How's your car been Red? Rattly as a renault? or solid as a rock?

Well I think the build quality is excellent - there are no rattles on my car and the car feels very well made. It's certainly better than BMW and I'd say nearly as good as Audi.

my previous car was an a3 and in comparison to this car my gti is like made out of cardboard. There is no part of the dash which doesnt rattle, rattles come from radio, top storage section, doors, dials and armrest.
Still love the car though, just have to drive around with the music up!!!

Those with rattles - how long before they started to develop? Or were they present to begin with? Asking as my GTi's only 2 days old and feels really well put together - better than my previous volvo S60
