Is it me or is the build quality of the golf interior absolutely shite? I'm getting annoying rattles from the driver's door, arm rest, dash top air vent and radio. I not going to bother bringing back for warranty work coz I don't think the dealers can do much about it. I'm thinking of bringing it to a good car audio specialist, that RS32 has recommended, for some dynamat extreme treatment and fitting of special sponges to stop all potential rattles. Has anyone else got similar problems and what have any of you done to rectify them.

Iv had mine for 8wks now only done 600 miles no real rattles except when its cold there is a little annoying rattle coming from the rear. It sounds like the parcel shelf or the rope attachment things that hold the shelf to the boot. Im the only one in the car so its hard to place exactly but i hate a rattle in a car my clio 172 was full of them other than that mine is great.

mine's been back again to the dealer to have rattly trim cured - they did a pretty good job on the dash, sunroof and rear roof trim.
the ideal solution seems to be silicon lubricant - alternatively you can use felt/velvet strips between the layers of plastic. |

I wanted to like the Mk V R32 and I kept changing my mind backwards and forwards and very nearly ordered one.
My existing car is a MkIV GTI 1.8T and after nearly 8 years I think that the cabin is a special place to be. Quality materials and super Recaro seats. When I sit in a Mk V it just does not seem the same. Posts on these forums talk about rattles and poorer quality plastics. It just does not seem as up market. A number of people have had issues with the seat bolsters on cloth and leather seats and the Recaros seem to be coming to bits for some people needing extra clips. I know the Mk V is better than the Mk IV for handling etc. The progressive pull of the engine and the sound of the exhaust are both excellent on the R32 and I always have a good look at one when I see an R32 on the road. But for me this was not enough as it is the overall package I look at. Instead I have a new Audi S3 on order which ticks more boxes for me. So VW, sort out all of these issues and maybe next time I'll spend my money with you. prt57 |

Perhaps mine is a 'good' one off then?! I honestly have got no rattles or squeeks or any build quality problems. The engine is niceley run in, and she is pretty much perfect. It's a UK car with Leather.

I was lent a Mk4 Golf (not R32 unfortunately) for a year before I got my Mk5 GTI and think that the Mk5 interior build quality isn't as good. The Mk4 R32 interior is exceptionally good imo.
I hear different squeaks and rattles on different days and even during the same journey. However, once I'm focussed on my driving or 'making progress', such squeaks are simply not heard above the sound of my Millteks! It all depends on your individual expectations. If the odd squeak matters to you then get an Audi, but I'd prefer a VeeDub anyday. You can't beat the comfort and support of the Mk5 .:R and GTI seats imo.

In standard form I think the build quality of the Mk4 was way above the Mk5.
That said, the Mk5 GTI pees all over the Mk4 in every respect.

If you mean that the Mk5 GTI pees all over the Mk4 R32, then I disagree. Both assuming that peeing = performs better.

I meant GTI vs GTI
I have never driven an R32 so can't really comment. From some of the great posts in the section of the forum it sounds like an amazing car and if I was in the market for a hot hatch it would be top of the list. The only thing I don't like from a styling point of view is how close the exhasts are together. It reminds me abit of the Clio 172, i.e. pea shooters. I think the Mk4 ones were spaced wider apart which has a more aggressive image IMO. If you have a MK5 R32 please feel free to mock my exhasts, as they are down turned and have been known to kick out sizeable clouds of black smoke
