It is a fluid type system not cable so there is no adjustment
Sometimes (mostly when cold) its hard to get the car in to 1st and 2nd gear. Also sometimes when coming up to a junction the change down to 2nd baulks. You seem to really have to depress the clutch right to the floor.
The clutch doesn't seem to slip at all so I was thinking it could just be the cable that needs replacing?
Or perhaps it just requires adjusting slightly?
The car has now covered 106k.
When I have had clutch's wear out before they usually get heavier and then start to judder when pulling away. However I dont seem to have any of that so hopefully it should last a while longer.

They will need model etc to know if its a hydraulic clutch.
My guess is that the gearbox is getting worn. My Passat is at 162k and i can feel that 1st and 2nd can be difficult to engage, only when the engine is cold and mostly when i rush the gear change.
Something you may have to put up with as the mileage gets higher.

So what are we saying then boys - Do I just have to lump it?

What about gear shift rods or something?

Have the same issue. Mine ('98 1.8 SE) has 102k on the clock, on some very cold mornings, I cannot get it into first. Generally, my gear change is a bit notchy in all gears.
Sounds like the Passat’s have a common problem with the lower gears. I have problems with the second gear too when the engine is cold. I had this problem since I bought it and it was on 60K so I don't think it's got to do anything with the weariness just another fault. Not what you wanted to hear guys huh?? If its just when cold perhaps a different grade of gearbox oil would help?
There are some mega techy types on my 205 forum - will ask them.

The problem is some times the cable opration is upset by the cold weather, as the cable become shorter in the cold weather (Due to the magic of science) the gears are not selected as easly.
