one or more lambda sensors linked to the cats could have failed - I recognise this light from my old petrol MkIV.

YES, you are right, the lambda sensor has gone. they are charging £150 to sort it

Is that a fair price?

Its that Parts and Labour, then I think it pretty fair, most of which will be labour. Probably classed a 2 hour job!

Its not a VW Dealer, its actually, a garage which is part of the AA, dont think l can mention the name on this site

glad the problem's been found and can be corrected.

150 quid is not too bad - the parts are not cheap - although it only takes a few minutes to swap the lamdba sensors IIRC. the VAG-COM light reset is only a quick job as well.

be aware that it is possible to reset the warning light without changing the lambda sensors - the light will come back on after a few miles if this has happened.
