  1. (Previous Honda Accord 2.4 exec, now A5 3.0TDI quattro ) Faults: Instrument cluster changed due to battery warning light on cold starts, apparently firmware fix needed, software upgrade not possible. Minor oil leak. That's all. Ride - generally absolutely fine, although will treat potholes with a thud not an thump, higher speed stability very planted and stable. Tyres - 235/40/18 95Y XL - used Goodyear F1 and F1 assymetric mostly. Make sure you get the 95XL rating as used lesser rating once by mistake and ride much worse. Approx 25K miles/tyre front; 30K miles/tyre back; till they're only just legal. Handling - much maligned in my opinion for this variant, I have driven other variants and they are much worse, the quattro always keeps things tidy, progressive understeer if you really push, but grip levels so high for normal road use that inconsistencies in the road surface generally prohibit exploring limits as off road experience too expensive. For a trackday - sure it won't reward like an Exige, but A4 Avant's not my idea of a trackday car. Complete hoot in the snow, hope next winter's as good. Steering - quick & responsive, the variable weighting is seamless, you really notice it's missing when driving other cars. Engine - An absolute jewel, no diesel noise whatsoever in the cabin and a loverly thrum when under power, b**dy addictive. Never used a drip of oil. You can drive perfectly normally keeping up with the traffic without exceeding 1600rpm. Makes a 3.0D BMW sound like an old tractor. Gearbox - very short 1st gear takes a bit of getting used to but otherwise very excellent. Lights (non-xenon) are rubbish, Philips Extreme bulbs rectify without pain of being flashed by other traffic that think you're dazzling them when you have xenons Driving position - excellent, poor pedal layout niggles a bit, heel n toe possible if you're somwhat double jointed, clutch pedal high. Again you get used to it. Rear legroom - OK unless large adults front and back - buy a bigger car if you wan't more room! Boot - nice flat 1mx1m space. One silly feature - folding the back seats puts a dent in the leather from the middle seatbelt buckle - use a stiff booklet to prevent this. Economy (tankful to tankful measured) Overall 80K miles 36.7mpg on mostly A roads with multiple roundabouts, balance of keen driving and economical, some town and some country DIS (after VAG tweak to improve accuracy) reads 40.2. Best 48mpg - a gentle cruise down the motorway strictly within the speed limits Worst 17mpg - a hardcore digital drive after received a call to say my factory was on fire:eek: Media/Nav etc. the SD cards for mp3s (2x 2GB max) are excellent providing you are competent with PC to transfer music. CD changer a waste of money in this scenario. Sat Nav is OKish but crap usability due to lack of touchscreen and can be dangerous as set low on console and easy to be distracted. TMC upgrade after 1yr overcame that omission. Anyone don't believe me try one in a honda. Audi and germans really need to wake up on this. Postcode entry only first 4 characters-almost pointless. Audio quality with Bose is frankly no better than adequate, weak Bass and flat bland sound with no presence, though considerably better than non-Bose. Again the Honda blitzed the Audi in this respect. Radio fine, little interference. Bluetooth phone connection worked very well but can be phone dependent so check if your model works well. Overall a fabulously competent car, in amy ways without peer. Very sad to see it go. The A5 is still new to me, better in many ways but here and there the A4 still trumps it. As a used purchase 10/10 - not said lightly but you won't regret it, with the caveat the audi bills are ludicrous so best covered with insurance, just in case.
