Vista Ultimate OEM

Hi

My Dell came preinstalled with an OEM version of Vista Ultimate (and no hard copy).

It's a long story but the PC needs reformatting and due to problems with the RAID array the original Dell partition with the restore image is not available.

I have a sticker on top of the PC with an OEM Vista Ultimate Product Key.

Is it just a case of *downloading* any OEM Vista Ultimate Version and using the key to reinstall?

That's an option, yeah, but I'd call Dell and have them supply you with the Vista installation DVD instead, just to ensure you've got a fully legit copy. They shouldn't put up a fight once you've given them your Service Tag, and they won't charge you postage.

I've got the full Ultimate OEM DVD if you need me to try and copy it for you. I guess your Dell OEM key should work okay with it. PM me if you want me to copy it for you.

I have had problems in the past (with XP) and using OEM product codes with full retail installation discs (and different OEM discs e.g. an HP provided disc and a Dell laptop with product code). I would expect Vista is the same. As suggested I'd give Dell a call in the first instance.

IIRC Dell OEM versions check the BIOS on the machine to validate the install so you don't have to activate or enter the number.
