spikeyboy
Just looking for some advise really. The other night i was driving home at around 2.30 in the morning doing 40 in a 30 (yes i know i was speeding but it was quite, none built up area etc etc) - there was a Gatso on the other side of the road, which i knew was there, i didnt slow down as it was facing the other direction (i.e. towards me). As i appoached the Gatso it went off (flashed twice) which i thought was wierd as i always understood that they didnt go off for oncoming cars. I have been told that Gatso's have not been approved for forward facing action by the home office and as such i have nothing to worry about - is this true or am i likely to be getting a letter in the post ? SamD
If it was a gatso, as far as I know you have nothing to worry about at all
J_C
This is my understanding too, in fact a similar thing happened to me on Saturday evening on the Fosse Way. A forward facing Gatso flashed (only once on this occasion) as I passed it at about 8mph over the posted limit.
Cris
Damn dangerous if you ask me. Very bright lights flashing right at you at night. Could cause an accident!
spikeyboy
I have been told that is the reason Gatso's are not approved for forward facing action. Thanks for the replys - guess i just have to wait and see if i do get a letter, if i do ask for a copy of the photos and contest it
OliFH
You can't get caught going the 'wrong way' by a traditional Gatso - only the Truvelo (sp?) ones - the Gatsos in Richmond/ Chiswick as you head out to the M3 are always going off for cars on the other side of the road

David [/ QUOTE ] The question is was it definitely a Gatso or was it a Truvelo? If it was a Gatso and facing (flashing) towards your as you approached it, its possible the camera had a bit of a moment and went off in error - it happens. Where there lines on your side of the road? If not, no worries I remmeber looking into the Truvelo thing as it was long rumoured that they used infra-red flashes that you couldn't see but it seems they use a magenta flash thats is visible but still approved for forward facing use - I'll see if I can dig that info out
J_C
[ QUOTE ] Were there lines on your side of the road? If not, no worries [/ QUOTE ] There were in my case, although I'm 99% sure it only flashed once.......
spikeyboy
Deffo Gatso, there is only one Trevelo near where i live on the A21. However there were lines on both sides of the road. I was travlling towards is so it flashed in my face - did startle me a bit. Interstingly looking on the Tunbridge Wells Speed Camera web site, it lists all the speed camera's locations and what type they are, it also lists which way they are facing. On the camera i went past i wast travelling east and the web site lists it as facing west. there are other cameras listed in other locations that say both directions. On the above info the fact that their web site states it only faces west should give me more hope of not getting a ticket. Intersting that the web site also lists all the mobile locations and when they are manned.
Sparky
If it was this, you're OK If was this, you're probably not! Lines on both sides of the road is now quite common for Gatso's too. It prevents cars from trying to avoid their lane when speeding past, not to capture others on the wrong side as first thought.
