Rustynuts
Faulty maf can cause poor fuel economy, but also check tyre pressures and monitor mpg manually via fillups etc.
Durrsaku
Cold weather and change from texaco back to Shell seems to have affected mine recently. From 39.5 to 35.5 on the normal trip to work.
gypsyboy
what is the maf? how much to change? can i do it? tyre pressures are in order i check them regular. as for fuel i always get mine from tesco's
Rustynuts
MAF = Mass Air Flow sensor. It senses the volume of air coming in through the air intake, tells the ecu, which then fuels the engine accordingly. Cost about £60 - £90 depending on which dealer or spares shop you go to, and 5 minutes to change.
gypsyboy
cheers where would i find the maf? also i know it will sound silly but where is the air filter housing located?
Pa55aT
The airfilter is in the front of the engine just behind the drivers headlamp. The maf is in a pipe that comes out of the airbox with the connector on it. You do not remove the maf (it is held in with two security torx bolts) but the whole pipe about 4 inches long, VW will give you the full part. If you do buy one I would get one from a main dealer as they are reasonably priced and will knock £20 off on exchange. Here is a thread posted a while back, I have replied about the 3rd thread down and attached a picture of the maf. http://www.tyresmoke.net/ubbthreads/show...true#Post785882 Thanks Chris
gypsyboy
cheers for your message chris. where can you get the implement to remove the maf(torx bolts)? is there any kind of test for the maf? its a lot of money to spend if it wont cure my high mpg. do you think a dirty air filter could be the problem would it make that much difference? cheers again
meriafel
It's best to change the whole MAF from VW so you won't need Torx sockets. However if you do want a set Sealey Tools do a set of unusual small sockets in a case for £9.99 or less that contains all you will ever need to repair/dismantle most electrical appliances etc. Change the air filter first if it shows to be dirty and vacuum the air box that retains the air filter as it is usually full of leaves etc.
gypsyboy
ive been to chat to my man at the independant vw garage he first suggested to try branded diesel(i currently use tesco) also he said if the maf is shagged i would lose power,he thinks it might be some sensor to do with the heating of the engine cant remember what he called it but if shagged it compensates with giving more fuel hence poo consumption. also said he is going to stick it on a diagnostic. meriafel
If you are changing the MAF change the MAP too. They are only about £20 (Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor). The VW dealer I buy my parts from replaces both.
