ben29
Hi, I'm looking to buy a 2nd hand A3 1.8T for around £5k, hopefully a 2000 model. Could anyone give me any ideas of what to look out for i.e. common faults etc? Cheers, Ben
SJC1975
Oil pump can go on the 1.8t. Its a common problem according to the AA.
steve1975l
I think you should be able to pick up a nice one for £5k. Go for a facelift easy way to tell is one piece headlights. Make sure the cambelt and water pump have been done otherwise take some off asking prce (£300-£400). Check rear washer/wiper works. Check drivers door message in DIS goes away when you shut the door. Check there are no beeps coming from back left which could mean the alarm problem. Check for knocking at the front over small pot holes and you can feel it through steering. Anti roll bars. If buying privately take your time and bring a friend who knows a bit about cars. Just check everything works. Check that things add up such as address on log book is the where you are looking at the car. Check services have been done and check dates and mileages even call the garage to verify. And enjoy they are nice cars. Better with a re-map but that's another thread.
