AndyCh
My wife's 2006 GTI won't start. She was parked up at the supermarket and started it in gear by mistake and it obviously lurched a little. No problems there you think, but after that it wouldn't start. It doesn't turn over when you turn the key, nothing happens at all. I wondered if there was an immobilsier reset, but there doesn't seem to be one, so I'm a bit stuck. I've looked under the bonnet, but it doesn't really look like an engine as I remember them! Any ideas? Oh, we live in Denmark and don't have any breakdown cover.... RedRobin
....Have you tried locking the car, walking away for a few minutes and then returning and starting all over again? - It might just need to reset its systems.
JonnyGTi
My GTi would'nt start after 6 weeks of ownership. It did turn over, but just died immediately with a lot of strange warning lights coming on and off. Turned out to be a faulty electronic entry control box. Yours sounds different as it is not even turning over. The things that the technician tried with mine before giving up were : 1. Try the other key fob 2. Disconnect the battery and reconnect after a short break (to reset the electronics) - make sure you have the CD / Radio code You could also try checking out the starter motor ? Hope this helps...let us know how you get on
AndyCh
Yes, I've tried the locking unlocking thing to no effect, although maybe an overnight rest will have done it some good. I've tried the other key fob, as the immobilser is a chip in the key. I'll try the battery disconnection next. Thanks Andy
AndyCh
I got the car started (bumped it in about 10 feet of space after all the shoppers had gone home), but it didn't fix the problem. Anyway, got it home and bumped it this morning and my wife took it to the local VW garage in Aarhus. They have said it needs a new starter motor, and they are fitting it now. Is this is covered by the warranty? I don't want to pay a big bill if it is covered. Thanks Andy
Gemmzl
I would imagine it's covered. Just don't tell them how it happened.
AndyCh
All done under warranty. Surely they couldn't invaildate the warranty because someone starts a car in gear. Birds do it all the time !!!
petsy
just a word of caution but I would advise you against trying to bump start your car as it can lead to damage of your catalytic converter.
AndyCh
Yes, I know, but emergency breakdown callout was DKK1500 (approx GBP140) and tow to Aarhus was another DKK2500. I thought the potential to save almost 400 quid was worth the gamble!
petsy
fair enough. out of curiousity and seeing it's a 2006 car, doesn't Denmark VW give you free VW assistance or has your free assistance now expired?
AndyCh
It expired at the end of March unfortunately, and I chose not to renew. I mean, a 2006 VW, surely it can't break down ........ On returning to the UK (later this year), I'll sort out AA cover again. I have an Elise in storage, and you don't travel without AA cover, although thinking about it, that car has never broken down in 7 years of ownership (touches lots of wood). Lotus more reliable than VW shocker !

I guess the starter motor tried to pull the car forward with the handbrake firmly on.
RedRobin
I thought you couldn't start the Mk5 GTI if the car is left in gear - The ignition key simply won't turn IIRC. At least that's how it is with DSG.
Jack_is_Back
A manual will turn over if left in gear - even with the clutch up.
AndyCh
Yep, a manual is a manual - you can't, or shouldn't change that. I just need to recognise that my wife should have had a DSG. Another shocker - DSG is for girls !!!
