theduisbergkid
So, Mr Brown has announced a 2p increase in fuel duty "for environmental reasons" (paraphrasing there), can someone please explain how making Europe's most expensive petrol even more expensive will help the environment ? Are we all scrapping our cars today and getting our bikes out ? Nope ? So, want my vote Mr Brown ? Try this - 2p increase on fuel duty, 100% of which goes to the cost of re-nationalising the rail network, which will be run on a non-profit basis from next year by the state, using money from car tax to pay for any maintenance / repair as may be needed. This will free up congestion and give people a real choice regarding transport as opposed to just walloping the motorist. (meanwhile, back on planet earth)... m4ttm4son
This weather isn't helping me to want to cycle either. Plus the fact I'd rather get to work fresh and ready for the day, rather than a sweaty mess. Feck it, put 10p on the price of petrol if it'll sort the train system out and make it a clean, comfortable, safe-feeling, swift journey
RedRobin
....Shouldn't this thread be in General Cars? Am I going to scrap my car? - NO WAY!!!!
sufu
What government has singularly failed to realise is that cars are by far the best form of personal transport. You don't get people to give up the best option by making it more expsensive, you do it by making a BETTER option. Taxes keep getting raised, government gets bigger, needs more cash, so they raise taxes, government gets bigger.....
sotty
The sickening thing is it only costs around 25-30p to bring a litre to the pumps!!
theduisbergkid
My general gripe is that the huge amount of revenue raised is not used to improve the general transport situation. Bloody government. Harumph. Etc.
m4ttm4son
Is any of the tax used where it should be? Road tax -> repairing roads? Think it might be fairer if you had to pay road tax to your local authority. Makes sense to me.
shao_khan
Yeah but lets face it - how much of this extra revenue generated will be used on anything 'environmental'? Nowt will change - other than us paying more.
Soapsuds
If more people start to make changes in the way they run their cars (i.e. Biodiesel) this will soon start to hurt him! Buy a s**t arse old Merc / BMW / French diesel and run her on 100% bio. No need to pay duty. 50p per litre. Then keep whatever special (petrol or bio!) car you want for the weekends. I have just switched to using Bio in my 320d. I get family rates. £10 for 25 liters of the purest stuff you can find. More and more people are going this way (and more are making their own!)...... I, like many others, agree that if the extra cash (or even the cash we CURRENTLY pay) will improve the Public transport options, then this is for the good. ardandy
Bio only works in samll numbers though. For everyone to use it, 2/3's of the earths surface would be used purely for growing fuel! Think of the environmental damage then!

Sparky
[ QUOTE ] Stephen Joseph, executive director of the Campaign for Better Transport and a complete tosser, said the rise was welcome, provided the extra money raised was used to improve public transport and "other measures that will give people real travel choices". [/ QUOTE ] See, that's just what annoys me. When will they realise you can't put a friggin' train line from my house to my work - and so therefore I am not getting 4 trains to work each day, and 4 back - it just won't wash. So for me there are no choices, and for a lot of people it's the same. So, just rip-off Britain again.
sufu
Partly apathy, partly the knowledge that the political system no longer matters or works, it's turning into a "them" and "us" country, those in government vs the general populace. The only things standing between is the justice system, which seems to have lost it's backbone.

garcon magnifique
I must admit to being a little perplexed by the way this story was being pushed in the media today. "With fuel duty rising by 2p a litre, there are fears that petrol prices may rise today by as much as 2p a litre" No sh.t Sherlock!
