oil top up

Hi folks,

I've had my GTI 6 months or so, only about 5,500 miles on it so far. I was topping up the windscreen washer fluid lastnight and while I was at it, I checked the dipstick too (Bear in mind, I'm not mechanically minded at all!!)... So I was somewhat surprised to see the oil-level just about at the "MIN" mark. I've not had any warning lights appear in the dash yet though.

Is this normal, and should I be topping it up? If so, how much do you put in and what type of oil is best? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I've never gone near this type of stuff before on previous cars...

Oh, and I've read stuff before on long-life servicing, etc.. I don't think my car is set up for that, as far as I know, my service is regular interval (i.e. once per year, or 10,000 miles)

Castrol Edge 5w30 from Halfords, about £14 for 1L.

That is the longlife oil which your car will have had from the factory even if the dealer has changed it to time and distance servicing. Many people are paying the extra for the longlife oil at servcies even if the car is on TandD as it is better quality.

Some oil useage in the first 10K is fairly common, it will probably settle down after that.

You're doing better than me. Oil warning light came on at 3500 miles (after a 150 mile trip). Put 1 litre of Catrol Edge in and showed just off max on dipstick. Then 1500 miles later (at just 5000 and again after a longish trip) the oil light came on yet again (another litre to fill her up). Rang the dealer to check and they said anything up to a litre per 600 miles was ok at first 10-12k(something to do with there being no lead in the petrol and oil having to do the lead's job)and that if I'd read the manual I'd know that. Problem is the manual is in dutch as it's an import (Simpledeal - very cheap but constant problems getting the promised English manual). I was also told that the warning light comes on early and as long as you don't drive for any distance you won't harm your engine. Although i now check the oil every fortnight just in case!

Joe - dealer tried to do that trick with me too,if you bought new it's set for Long Life.Check on the display(Get in car, turn on ignition needn't start,WAIT for seat belt warning to go off, then press and hold trip reset for a few secs. KMs to service will come up,then days to service)

Castrol Edge 5w-30 is the one,its important you only use this.I've seen it priced in Ireland from €17 to €23 per litre, cheapest in Motor Factors, dearest in accessory shops

cheers, thanks for that! I'll get myself that oil...

I checked the Service indicator, it says 8500kms or 158 days... considering the car has about 8500 kms on it currently, and its 6 months old, I'm not sure does that mean its on variable or fixed interval!

My bets are that the monkeys I bought it off wouldn't have a clue either.

Well mine drank 3 litres in the first 9,000 miles which i put down to me using the dsg in auto/sport. like this it redlines the car quite alot, so i started driving it and trying to avoid the redline more often than not, and what do you know?

in the last 3,000 miles it aint used a drop.

something to beware of for dsg owners. 169144-ok.gif
