mb
Hi Sidelight has finally gone on the MkIV, way back when I bought some LEDs but didn't fit them after everyone said they failed quickly so is the current opinion the new LEDs or Silver Stars or similar ? Also is it worth changing the main bulbs while I'm there or is that a pleasure best left for another day (was hoping to not have to remove the bumper & main beams are working) ? dogbucket
I ran a set of BA9 LEDs from Ultraleds for a year or so before I sold the car and they were fine. The earlier ones they sold did fail quickly, but this was fixed several years ago and they now can handle higher voltages. I think I did do the main beams without taking the bumper off, using a mirror to see what I was doing. But it was not easy.
Rocket_Man
I've had some Ultraleds in for the last year without any problems. I did buy four (and kept the normal bulbs) for backups but haven't needed them yet. I've also got PIAA xtreme white bulbs fitted for my main beam. They are well worth fitting and make a big difference (and look better alongside the HID's). I fitted both the above without removing the bumper. If you remove the battery (just removing the cover makes a little more space) the near side is very easy to change. The off side is a little tight and you will get scuffed hands, but it's not worth taking the bumper off. I would do it all in one go too, its only one set of wounds to heal
mb
Thanks, do you know which bulb I need for the main beam ?
mb
Used Mook's helpful guide & changed both in 15mins with the ones I bought a while ago will see how they fare, decided discretion was the better part of valour for the HL bulbs ! Mook
Local? Local?! So'ton's bloody miles away. We only drive tractors and combine harvesters in this part of the world
mb
Ah yes, but I live nearer the Isles of Combine Harvester when I am not in Southampton for work...
R32Ash
Having read this thread, I'm taking it that I got off very lightly (no pun intended) having paid just £4 for a sidelight bulb replacing? One of mine had blown (apparently) and it was replaced during the last service, with no labour charge.

Good job they did for free as I wouldn't have been happy at all if they'd expected me to pay them some ridiculous labour charge having done a job without permission. Edited to add: It was at a VW dealer - Hayselden's of Barnsley to be precise. They're a top-notch outfit in my opinion and I've never had a problem with them. Unlike the dealer in Huddersfield who I bought the car from...

mb
[ QUOTE ] An easy job for jimmy's pliers [/ QUOTE ] Funny you should say that, I managed to change them without tipping the headlight forward & did think for the passenger side one I would need the long nose pliers but managed without in the end !
