encee
Okay gents (and ladees of course ), possibly looking to buy my first A4, and I would like to know which variant, not including the S4 and RS4 is the quickest, as in "real world" usability quickest. I`m aware of the performance stats for the latest special editions, ie, the 220ps upgrade, but how do these compare to the 3.0l TDI models ? Again, I haven`t a preference for either manual or auto, as I believe the 3.0 TDI is tiptronic anyway. I`m looking to get the B7 model (forgive my ignorance on this, as I`ve only just started to look into going Audi ), and I`ve got a budget of late 20`s. I`d probably be looking at something "slightly"-used, as I have a budget of late 20`s. Any help appreciated, thanks.
P_G
You could get a used B7 S4 for mid to late 20's, but I don't suppose that helps?

[/ QUOTE ] Thanks for the reply mate. To be honest, I`d love an S4, but I do a 40-odd mile round trip to work every day, so I need something a bit more economical, hence my interest in something lesser. I`ve only ever had one Audi, which was an 80, many, many moons ago, and I`ve dallied loads of times over the years with buying another, but it`s just never happened for one reason or another, so I just thought I`d ask the experts ! EssFour
Chav raves about the 3.0ltr sooty. Plenty of torque. Its speed is comparable to the S4.
Sparky
The 3.0TDI is a peach of an engine and is plenty powerful enough. I tested the 2.0T TFSI (220ps) and found it to be quick. It's no S4 mind. Really depends on what else you'd like from it. Plenty of toys, or just as fast as you can for around £25-£30k?
UBM
Get the 3.0TDI!
encee
I would say that the power is probably most important to me Sparky, so does that mean that the 220ps petrol ones are quicker than the 3litre TDI, or vice-versa? Okay, yes, I would like plenty of toys too, along with as new a car I can get of course (don`t want much, do I ? ), but I would hate to buy something for the toys alone, and then think "hmm....plush, but slow !) At the end of the day, I know that it`s down to me to get test-driving, but just thought I`d ask. Thanks again gents.

encee
Why so, Bob ? Better engine in the 3litre, quicker than the 2litre variants mate ?
robpink
3.0 smoother & quieter than 2.0tdi, sounds a bit crap on idle but on the move just sounds like a V6, masses of torque so great overtaking ability. Tip' box very reliable(more so than multi box found in 2.0), good enough for RS6 after all! Give one a test drive, don't think you'd be disappointed

I intend trying the 3litre TDI, and the 2litre 220ps petrol ones, and then take it from there. It`s years since I owned an auto, and until I recently changed job-locations, I probably wouldn`t have considered one, but I now do lots of motorway driving, which, as we all know, carries with it the inevitable stop-start fun, especially around rush hour, so a tiptronic box sounds like it may be a good compromise between full auto when you don`t have the option for having any fun, and gearchanging when you do. Never driven a tiptronic though, so that should be fun........
DanG
I have a 2.0T SE Quattro 6 speed Sline Avant (Whew..!) Its a cracking car, comes with all you really need in a sporty looking wagon. I would never go back to FWD or RWD after having Quattro too. But... On spirited drives you can get through a tank of fuel in sub 300 miles. Well I can anyway. On the flip side, I can also get over 400 miles on long motorway journeys.
encee
Thanks Dan. I must admit, the run-out Special Edition models do look very appealing with loads of kit, and a bit of extra oomph in 220ps guise. Never really had to travel much distance to work before, (and I know that 42 miles round-trip is nothing to some on here), but with spending more time on the motorway, you do start to see the value of something comfortable and well-specced. As I said though, the power thing is very important, but not at the expense of everything else. I say this because there is currently an `07 plate BMW 335D in a local BMW dealer to me, for "only" 30k. Unfortunately, it has nothing specced on it, which is a shame, or I`d be snapping their hand off. Yes, I have remembered I`m on the Audi forum here, but y`know what I mean....... [/ QUOTE ] Was going to mention the 335d earlier but since you stated you wanted an audi did'nt, out of the two audi's it would def. be the 3.0tdi but do you really want to buy a nearly new one when a new model is upon us you'll take a pounding when you come to shift it. Some 335d's on pistonheads with a few bits of spec on them about the 30k mark you could also haggle a bit on them to.

andyccr
I had Ipswich Audis loaner which was a 2.0TDI 140 S line Avant auto (with only just under 4k on the clock) the other week and loved the way it drove when I put it in 'S' mode. Drove like a sack of shite in normal Auto mode! Would have like to have tried the proper tiptronic mode though. You might get a very good deal on a new B7 and you can spec RNS navigation for only £500 too !!! OR perhaps wait another couple of months and see what dealer demos come up for sale as they often only keep them for 6 months before selling them on. DanG
Yes NAV for £500 is a bargain!
Sparky
When I had a B6 the prices didn't drop that much when the B7 came out. With it being nearly new, the first owner has taken the big hit out of the price. If you're happy with diesel, then I'd certainly try the 3.0 TDI. Soulboy
And correct me if I am wrong, but they aren't doing the 2.0t in the new model are they? So that may help a bit with residuals.
Xedos
They will do the 2l t later.
